Difficulty Changing Gears Sometimes

Ocasionally I have difficulty changing gears in my Avensis (2.0 D4D 2002 model). Today it was particularly bad though, a few times I couldn't get it to go gear at all. Sometimes it was ok if I let the clutch out and then pressed it again, other times it seemed to go into gear with the engine switched off. I then restarted with the clutch pressed and all was ok. I don't know if it was just coincidence that it went in gear when the engine was off or not, because sometimes will go into gear.

Previously I've very ocasionally had to press the clutch twice to change gears but never had anything like I had today

Anyone have any ideas what could cause this and what else to look for?

EDIT: I think I might've found the problem - but need to confirm tomorrow. I'll wait and see if anyone has any ideas before I post what I think is the cause :)

Hi Graham

Like you on my 2002 D4D I have had problems with gear changing since day 1

Its never refused to go into gear, but its never "slid" home, and always felt a little rough.

Told the dealer several times, but they said "they're all like that", and in 60,000 miles its never got any worse. Matching revs to road speed when changing also a little rough at times.

Strangely enough, change slightly better when driving in heavy rain !

Would like to know how you overcame problem

Cheers

Bazzer

The problem I had was much more than rought gear changes, it just wouldn't go into gear at all.

I'm fairly sure I've found the problem. It was very simple and would've been embarassing if I'd taken it to a garage without checking!! I found it immediately after I first posted this thread.

The floor mat had slid so far forward that I think it was stopping the clutch from completely pressing down. Only a small amount but it seemed to be enough to cause the gear change problems. I've adjusted the mat and all now seems ok :)
