Fiddlers Ferry?

I think I have seen that view of Fuji while I was in Tokyo. I was doing brake development at Isuzu which was one of my customers and I stayed in the Kio Plaza Hotel. Answer me a question about that. I took the limosine (airport bus) from downtown Tokyo and me and a colleague could see the peak of the volcano from the river bridge on the way back. A freind of mine reckons it is impossible.

What do you say?

Can't say where I work just I case the boss is watching :D

The little picture is Fuji viewed from Yokohama Bay. The Skyscraper in the foreground is the Landmark Tower, part of the bayside Minato Mirai 21 development. The Landmark Tower was (maybe still is) when I visited Japan the tallest freestanding habitable building in Japan (as against taller radio towers etc). The view's, especially the early evening views, of Yokohama and beyond, from the 69th floor observation deck where spectacular :toast:

If you ever get the chance, go to Yokohama, it is a great city, very laid back compared to Tokyo (which is also one of my favourite cities in the World).

Viewing Fuji is very much a matter of luck, depending on the weather, the pollution and the time of year. Clearer skies in winter helps. But I could see Fuji from Narita airport on the east side of Tokyo the day I landed, so it is very possible if you get the right conditions.

Did you enjoy your time in Japan? Do hope so.

With luck I will go back there again some day.

Fujisan

I will never forget my visit to Japan (I think it must have been about 1996). Apart from having to spend time in engineering meetings, we did go to visit some places and I loved every minute of it. The whole place was immaculate, I never saw any litter. The culture was superb, everybody was polite and utterly well behaved. There may be crime but I never saw any. I remeber walking amongst camera shops at night with all the cameras out on display in the street and nobody walked off with them. I can also remember walking through Tokyo main railway station and seeing what seemed like a million bicycles - non locked up and the business men who stayed there overnight in cardboard boxes in the station undercrofts.

I can't remeber the name of the Hotel we visited to eat but we walked from the Kio Plaza and it was a group of three buildings formed in a triangle and we ate on the 52nd floor with views over the city. Fuji was alegedly visible but we were there in the dark. I would kill for another piece of Kobe beef cooked at the table!

It was a delightful experience and I would love to go again but it was expensive and the company paid. It was January and the air was cold and clear. We definitely saw Fuji on the way to Narita Airport, it was highlighted by the snow on top and I will take great delight in telling my cynical mate when I see him tonight for a couple of scoops.

Cheers mate and I hope you get your wish to go back!

I enjoyed reading your reply very much Anchorman

The memories of my time in Japan came flooding back. It is superb country and as you say everybody is so polite, the children so well behaved, people so willing to help a visitor.

Did you try the sushi? My Japanese friend took me to two resturants, the first a very posh sushi resturant in Toyko and another about an hour's ride, down the coast, on the shinkansan and that was even better! It was the type of small restuarant used by local people, not tourists and they served huge slabs of Salmon and Tuna and all sorts. It was brilliant! :yahoo:

Anyone thinking of going to Japan, get ourself a Japanese Rail Pass before you go, they are marvellous, it makes travelling around Japan so easy and the trains in Japan are wonderful, especially the shinkansan. Bet you wouldn't mind having a go driving a shinkansan, ah Anchorman!

Anyway I could talk about Japan (and China) all day.

Very happy that you enjoyed your visit to Japan and yes, one day, God willing, myself and my family will go back to Japan.

Enjoy the beer tonight

Agree with the bit about Kobe beef cooked at the table - had that in '89 in Amagasaki. I was visiting a steel mill on behalf of a major customer looking to increase their purchases, so it was all on expenses. The abalone starter was excellent, too. :eat:

Had a night in Tokyo - can't remember the name of the hotel but it was s****y - near the US embassy ISTR and cost >£200 pn. Was taken on a tour of the Emperor's palace gardens by one of the company managers and then around the markets with one of the secretaries. They were making sure I was happy  - they needn't have worried - they were head and shoulders above any steel mill in Europe at the time; perhaps not quite so cheap but they delivered exactly what was ordered, on spec and on time!

Riding Japan's trains, both the Bullet and local ones was an experience not to be missed, as was walking around the shopping malls in the evening - a hectic pace but no sense of any risk.

After a hard days sightseeing it never failed to amaze me how relaxed and safe everything was even late at night (but then again I didn't venture in to Roppongi at anything later than early evening).

I use to enjoy getting off the train near my Ryokan (traditional Japanese style hotel) and as I walked "home" buying a coffee and snack, just strolling, enjoying the cool night air and the quiet.

One night I caught the late Shinkansan from Kyoto and to my amazement Tokyo central station was still packed (near midnight) with business men - drunk business men :drunk: - all waiting in good humour for their trains home.

Can't imagine that happening here - unfortunately :(
