Why Do Diesels Smoke...?

My diesel smokes (black/grey) when I pull away when the engine is cold.

It depends how I pull away (not boyracer style) but if a light foot; no visible smoke, or normal pull; away there is sometimes smoke.

is this "normal"....?

Diesels will smoke more when cold. More pull away, more fuel used, more particulates = more smoke, nothing to worry about unless excessive, should be very little smoke on a level throttle. Kingo
