Annoying High-pitched Noise

Hi all,

Over the last couple of weeks my Corolla's developed an annoying noise. When the cars warm and i've been driving for bit a loud high-pitched noise will start. It only happens when the car is stationary - if i put my foot on the accelerator just a little the noise will go away. It's a bit embarrassing in traffic jams!

So tonight when i got home i left the car running to try and find where the noise is coming from. It's definitely not from anywhere in the engine bay - it seemed to be coming from the middle of the car. Anyway, when i tried resting my foot on the exhaust at the back of the car the noise went away - so it's something to do with the vibrations?

Anybody got any ideas what it could be? Cheers

i had a problem of sort wen i accelerate it would make a noise and then slowly stop. i have a performance exhaust and i went to quick fit they stuck it on a ramp!

from inside the car i felt it was coming from the left of the car but underneath and definitely roundt he back.

the guy at quick fit had a look and saw that the exhaust bracket clip was slightly loose just came out of its place a bit and my exhaust is very firm its just the little lock hanger thing was off and making a vibrating weird noise. just look near the exhaust make sure it is firm and none of the brackets are loose. as you said its from exhaust putting your foot onto it you stopped the vibration so its definitely something loose.

I've got this sound too. Have you found out what is causing it?

Assuming you've already eliminated the most likely cause (see TVOR's post above) then it's almost certainly the clutch release bearing.

Is this expensive to repair or replace?

Lets hope it isnt., That noise it probably the most annoying thing to have...

Ed_Shek... Does it only happen once your car has warmed up?

I always have to drown it out with loud music, even then i know its still making that noise...

Yeah it happens when the car is warmed up after a few miles. When I slowing down approaching queueing traffic or Lights the squeaking is at its loudest and constant. Can't hear at speeds over 30mph. Really is annoying. Thought it might have been a stone caught in the brakes but I've taken the wheels off and can't find anything!

you can hear it at speeds 30mph+ but faintly.... when i do a gear change you hear a quick and swift "week"...

try going over a hump when you know the noise is there, then go over a hump *whilst coasting with clutch down* then is the loud squeek still there? cos if it DOES NOT then we might have the same problem and try to figure WHAT THE HELL THE NOISE IS!!

my mechanic cannot see any physical problems but isnt sure where the noise is coming from....

sorry for the caps

Mine noise is audiable any speed under 30mph and changing gear or depressing the clutch makes no difference to the sound. I think my sound is coming from the rear and it comes when the car is moving along slowly.

Recently had the rear brakes checked last Saturday by an independant garage and they said they were fine so surely can't be that???

ahh my noise is something at the front.

it seems everyone is getting loads of different noises.

maybe we should record and then we can see if we all have the same problem.

might just hang my mobile out of the window for some sound recording!!

Ed_Shek - is your noise constant?

Its sounds really embarassing too. Loud and sounds like your gearbox is wobblying underneath.....

Im sure it has something to do with the clutch or accelerator (which narrows it down to alot, ahha)

As the noise happens when the car judders...

I too am on 37k 2002 tsport.

Its seems to be constant once the car has been driven a few miles. I'm getting the noise when driving slowly on smooth roads i.e. pulling up to some lights. Don't think mine has anything to do with the clutch or accelerator though! Don't really know how to explain this to a mechanic other than hope it happens when they are out testing the car.

Finally found out what my sound is. Its appears that the rear offside calliper has seized up and this is causing the anti squeal shins to rub against the brake disc. Had the rear wheels off over the weekend and the nearside rear spins freely but the offside rear sticks.

Have booked the car in at a nearby garage to service the rear brakes and hopefully this will sort out the problem!
