Quick question, do the 2002 onwards Corolla's have the same vvti engine as the 2001-2002 Avensis? What I'm getting at is if I buy a Corolla is it going to have the same old oil issues of the Avensis vvti engine? Thanks for any replies.

Crank, rods and pistons are different but the block is the same and the head is the same (slight difference on the 4ZZ to allow a sensor to fit but apart from that it's the same)

Few connecting part differences such as intake manifold, throttle body, knock sensor etc

Hi i had a 2001 y reg corolla 1.4 vvt-it and yes it burnt oil, i had a new short block replacement. I sold the car after having a second engine cos the first engine replacement failed after about 1000-1500 miles unsure of exact milegae cos it was over 2 years ago. But i noticed a problem around 25k i think engine was replaced at 45k ish then failed at around 46-47k give or take a few thousend miles. I understand the problem has been sorted although i do know of a couple of 04 plate 1.8vvt-i's using oil. It was from what i understand 1.4-1.6,1.8 vvt-i engines from 2000-2002 that where a problem. We have sold many corollas at work that are past 03 plates with no oil issues, but i have seen a couple of 04 plate avensis' has mentioned. On the whole both myself and my dad with is previous avensis and my corolla have had oil issues but we both stayed with toyota has on the whole they are very good quality cars. All cars have faults so no cars are perfect.

Cheers Steve, I agree theres no such thing as a perfect car and Toyota have a great reputation for low breakdowns etc. Trouble is my girlfriend had a 2002 MR2 with the vvti engine and although the short block was done under Toyota warranty it took about 3 months from starting the claim to getting the car back in one piece, much arguing with Toyota ensued, and even now 5 months after getting the car back it just doesn't drive the same and Toyota doesn't want to know anymore. Afraid I might be going back to VW Golf-land!
