Automatic Gearbox Removal

Anyone know if you have to remove the engine of an Avensis to get the automatic gearbox out? It's a yr2000, 1.8 VVTi. I've got a grinding noise when in 3rd & 4th, and to a lesser extent in 2nd gear. No noise when in 1st gear. I want to dismantle it and change the faulty bearings, but don't know how big a job this is. I did the same with a Marina years ago, which wasn't too bad.
