I have a 2001 Avensis 2.0 GLS VVTi facelift model. Ever since I bought it 3 years ago the tickover revs have been slightly lower than I would like but the revs seem to have gradually dipped further and most of the time I am getting a tick-over of 500RPM. It does tick-over but it's way too low, stand on the accelerator and you'll stall it, you have to 'blip the throttle' before you try to pull away. Occasionally it does seem to correct itself and tickover at near 900RPM but the 500RPM appears to be becoming more and more regular.

Furthermore, it is pinking badly! Any amount of revs in any gear from 2000RPM upto 4500RPM or so results in really bad pinking and I'm beginning to think the valves are burning out. Any ideas?
