Where Is The Speedo Transducer?

Hi, can anyone tell me where the speedo transducer is located on a 2002 2.0 Auto RAV4? I have an intermittent problem where the speedo needle drops to zero and then springs back into life shortly afterwards. I read elsewhere on the forum that this can be fixed by removing the plug from the transducer, cleaning and then refitting. But where's the plug/transducer??? :unsure: :unsure:

It is at the back of the gear box but most of the problems I have with rav speedos is the plug connector at the bottom of the drivers kick well . If you look down where your feet go in the drivers well to the right there is a trim (plastic screw in back and clips at the front) remove this and look for the lowest plug it is white and has a few wires in it remove the plug and check the conector and see if it is green? if so clean with wd 40 and refit the conector and give it a run. The water can get in from the sunroof it is worth keeping an eye on it as you might need a new sunroof pannel .

Hope this helps

Looks like you may have hit the nail on the head as I am also suffering with intermittent leaks from the sunroof!! What's involved to replace the sunroof panel??

There are 4 screws that retain the whole panel they are just on the inner edge of the sunroof they are torx screws just have to realign the panel after. dead easy shame the panel is so expensive.

Thanks for the info. I have just removed the panel in the footwell as you suggested, found the plug - contacts not green but I'll spray anyway. There seem to be two transducers on the auto gearbox, one sort of on the top and the other one sort of out of reach right round the back. I'm guessing it's the one right round the back that needs checking??

I would say so. The transducer needs to be near to the diff so it will be down the back. The one on top is probably a reverse or neutral switch.

Good luck.

Well, I can reach the transducer but the plug won't pull out - is there a clip or something that needs to be pushed in??

Spraying the internal connector in the footwell and wiggling the external connector on the gearbox has at least cured the fault for a while.

The trouble is Adrian they are all a bit different. Invariably the ones that are the toughest to get off are the ones you can only just get your finger ends to! There is definately a clip on the bulky side of the connector so don't force it.

What I usually do is to have a hunt around and see if there is a similar connector that is well within reach and practice on that. Once you have established what you are dealing with it is much easier. If not you usually squeeze right at the top (away from the transducer) to open the claw out or about halfway down the plug to push the claw in. What I have done before now is sent my digital camera down at arms length to take a photo then worked off that!!!

This post suggests it is worth persevering;

Good luck.
