I get around 350 - 370 to a tank on motorway miles, cruising at a reasonable speed. Its a very comfortable seat - I used to regularly do 250 mile trips and it was never a problem to do it in one stint, and i was always stepping out feeling fresh. 100 miles a day is easily do-able! The only small problems are that higher speed overtaking isn't the best. Its ok, but not like a turbo diesel... And the ride is quite hard if you get 17" rims, depending on the road condition and what you drive currently, you may feel like you're being shaken about it bit. I like it personally, but not to all tastes. Only thing I can say is take one out for a spin on a major road for 15 mins and see what you think! You'll certainly do a hell of a lot worse than a G7 Celica!

iv been up and down to looe in cornwall from southampton few times and i dont find it uncomfortable at all after 200 miles,

but fuel is a bit higher on the 190 vvtli engines, with standard fuel i get 250miles to a tank but with high octain fuel i and driving like a angle i can get about 320-350 miles to a tank

The Celica is not an especially good motorway cruiser as there is a lot of tyre noise. That said, it is not at all bad and it didn't put me off. There is nothing wrong with the driving position, although it is lower than most other cars. Steady driving on motorway/ trunk roads should yield about 35 mpg for the 140 and about 30 mpg for the 190 (the other two posters seem a little pessimistic - or they have big right feet ;) ). You might get a couple of mpg more on longer journeys, but it can come down dramatically in town. The insurance rating on the Celica is quite high for some reason.

Not sure if I would call a Celica especially light (probably about the same as an Astra or Focus). The only advantage of the six speed box is that you can improve the acceleration over a greater range (the 140 engine is not especially torquey, especially lower down) and it can become a pain as you are constantly changing gear.

If you are buying it for its style and you enjoy the feeling of driving a sporty car, then you could do a lot worse. If you are just buying it just for economy and performance, then there are probably better bets. Go across the car carefully for the known Celica faults before buying though (don't assume Toyota's reputation for build quality is flawless).

I've been fillin up a full 50 litres recently and keepin a record of how many miles I get to the tank and with a fair amount of motorway drivin i got 360 miles!

Second time round i got 340 with mainly city drivin but still a lot of motorway drivin and now i'm nearly empty the third time round and I'm gna be lookin at gettin close to the 300 miles mark with no motorway drivin at all!

So I'm happy with the fuel economy...considerin u can have fun in it, it ain't too bad at all!

Hope that helps a little!

140ps car, 95% motorway driving 50L only did 320 mile.

don't fell much pull when step on the gas, not even over 6000rpm, but sounds great

as mentioned above, this car not good at overtake.

mmm, for 45 litres of 95 petrol i did 375 miles in my gen 7 140 and that was about driving 70% on the motorway! wasnt driving like a grandad. get mileage like that every time.

Fuel economy is the biggest issue, its not hard to drive them sensibly but even with 6 gears they rev high at motorway speeds. There is a quite a bit of tyre noise and when combined with the noise generated from the windows it can be noisy but in terms of comfort the seats in mine are spot on and after a 3hour journey I can get out of the car as opposed to crawl out. lol

The 140 is in fact geared more highly than the 190 (presumably to allow for the fact it doesn't rev quite so high). I seem to remember at 70 mph (in top) the 140 turns over at about 3000rpm, whereas the 190 is running at about 3500rpm.

jzautoled, it is only the 190 that picks up over 6000rpm. The torque curve is pretty flat for the 140, although it falls off quite steeply at such high revs. The idea of the 6-speed box is that you can put it in the right gear according to speed so you are around the maximum torque. Probably why you are using so much fuel also ;)

yeah, with 140ps, max torque is about 4200rpm, best to change the gear around 4500pm to get max acc . just had my one about two weeks, so I'm testing with it, and seems drive at higher revs drink a lot more fuel :)

If you can get your hands on a Celica sales brochure, it has the torque curve in there. It is surprisingly flat and to get the best out of the car in terms of acceleration, you probably need to operate between 3500-5500rpm.

Just been to Cornwall in Anne's 190 with a friend of ours plus all the luggage for a week, with very few hold ups and high a high average speed the first fill up at 233 miles returned 26.5 MPG.

Yes there is a bit of tyre noise but I found the total 430 mile drive quite comfortable (even with my knackered back ;) )

I have the 140 vvti (2000) model and have been getting around 370 miles out of a full tank cruising between 70 -100mph. However the pre facelift models are notorious for guzzling oil, and consequently you have to be prepared to top up about 1L of oil for every 600-800 miles you do. This can make a dent in your fuel economy if you use expensive oil, but Lidl has some cheap synthetic based oil for around £7 for 5L, so that's all I'm feeding mine from now on ;) .
