Haynes Manual

I bought a manual from the U.S.A. because I could not find a Haynes Manual for my Rav4...sure it gives you some info and lots of technical jargon but everything you would normally do like adjust the tick over, clean the throttle body, top up the transfer box etc it just tells you to contact your nearest service centre...perhaps the americans can afford the £85.00 an hour charges....and talking of charges, my local Culvers wanted £45.00 + vat for half an hours work to drive the car round the vacinity to check a small judder that I had....My question is...is there an English manual for the Rav4 or am I stuck with the one I have.

Haynes only do a RAV4 manual for the USA market, if you want a UK manual you'll have to buy a set of genuine manuals off Toyota, bit like this.......

I have a full set of genuine manuals for the RAV4.2 ( thats 2000 to 2006 ) and half a set for the early RAV4.1, they do come up on eBay from time to time ,but you have to be quick and be prepared to spend a few quid  .

Just like Bob says, the USA Haynes is the only one around, and although it covers from 1996, it does the Mk1 from 1994. The Toyota workshop manual like Bobs says would do the trick but just watch what you get.... I bought a manual from a seller on eBay, for a Fiat punto and the thing was in Italian!!! Pizza is the extent of my Italian!

Good luck in finding one. From my experience with my 1994 3 door RAV, I had problems with judder due to a front caliper binding (at 160,000 miles) ; and the only other time was the rear suspension bushes needing replaced (at about 120,000 miles)

good luck

Ian

I really struggle with this reoccuring subject.

Why would anybody want a Haynes Manual or similar when you can have the proper worksop manual, specifically applicable to your model and year instead of covering a range of variants that donet apply to you and for the princely sum of €3 per hour? You can save as much as you want to your hard drive as pdf files.

It just bewilders me. We are very lucky that Toyota offer this service so why not use it?

Bob has the manuals - fair enough but any of us can have the same. You can buy them at the same Toyota Publications website for about £225 so to be able to read and print what you want is spot on as far as I am concerned.

The car has just had its 12 month service and MOT so I would have thought something like your two problems would have been picked up...I will still check these items out and let you know. Thanks

Judder now resolved with the replacement of the Dizzy Cap, Rotor Arm and new Leads...apparently they were offering low or faulty resistor readings and have now been replaced with new, the engine starts better and the tick over is stronger, the low speed judder gone...the lobes inside the old cap were completely encrusted and the rotor arm lobe was badly burned, the carbon brushes were completely worn away and by all accounts they could have been the originals and after 11 years it is not supprising they had started to die...I am a happy bunny once again.

Hi

I am from an age when if you purchased a product you also bought the rights to the technical information as well. Many products were supplied with full technical drawings and information. Also, help was available FOC from the manufacturer or importer! I remember I purchased some Tandberg HiFi years a go, amp, pre-amp, tuner and reel to reel recorder; each item was supplied (without asking) with full technical diagrams and setup procedures. How did we ever get down this road where you have to pay (extra) for technical information on the product you have purchased?

Toyota have the information to hand (they sell it), so how much cost is involved to supply a CD Rom with the vehicle full manual included? My local Toyota dealer wanted to charge me £40 for re-syncing my remote key fob after a Battery change... conveniently the information to 'press and hold both buttons for 12 seconds' was not printed in the owners manual! Mr. Toyota (and to be fair other manufacturers) must be making a whole shed-full of money holding back this information! Ever get the feeling your being exploited? Thank heavens for this forum and some of the very knowledgeable owners :)

Perhaps we should all club together, buy the manuals, and share them out... although I expect their is probably some copy write legal thing restricting that?

Dave

Things have changed.

I understand that vehicle manufacturers are duty bound by law to make technical information available to the motor trade under anti-competitive laws. However, they are not obliged to give us access to it, they can restrict it to registered businesses (I might be wrong).

They do insist that the information is not re-distributed which is why I have avoided uploading pdf files from my collection but there is nothing to stop you from logging on for one hour and downloading the entire manual for your own use. To be quite honest I think that €3 is dead cheap for a genuine workshop manual.

You don't get manuals with electrical goods any more because some do gooding cretin in Brussels thinks that customers might hurt themselves - so much so that you can't even put a plug on.

It's not unknown for me to voice my opinion about Toyota but I think some credit is due on this one.

I went to the publications site <http://techdoc.toyota-europe.com/default1.asp>, signed up, paid a subscription, found the appropriate manual and tried to open it. Only THEN was I told I would have to use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 - which I can't as I use a Mac. You would think that they would tell you this before you paid!!!

Thanks for the info I am also a mac user and I was going to download the manual myself this evening.

Looking on the FAQ I find this:

Q. Does the techdoc website support macintosh systems?

A. No.

Hi,

Following the advice in this thread... I have been to the Toyota Service download page, but I have a Rav 4 1998 (SXA 11R) and they only seem to list 2000 onwards.

Does anyone kmow if the American haynes book covers this engine type ?

There are some download sites, that seem to sell the mitchell on demand cd's for £20, I guess these may be against copyright ? but are they worth it ?

anyone know ?, othersise its £300 quid for a CamBelt change at the main dealer for me !

I cannae afford 3p fur a download so cannae comment oan the on-line T manual. I did however buy the USA Haynes manual a wee while ago when I had some money. It covers the USA models frae 1996 cos thats when they went American, but it does RAVs from 1994. I used it for things like changing the petrol tank and a few other bits and so on. The manual says 1996 thru 2002 All Models. Its written in English. (I did buy a CD for ma Punto which was written in Italian which wis nae help.)

The Haynes sells on eBay (well thats where I got mine). As I say I have no idea if the downloadable manual covers yours.

It'll be the 3SFE engine you have with a belt. According to the manual, there is slight difference between the idler pulley spring free length for 96/97 and 98-00 engines. It does have 3 pages of how to replace the belt with black n white pictures as well! Seems enough to do the job...

things like remove a wheel, remove an engine mount aifter ye block up the engine wi the wife or 2 we'ens; and so on. Looks like a job for inside a garage/in a dry bit...or you could do what I do and use space heaters wi propane ootside. I'd to come into the house this afternoon cos it was getting too hot ootside!!
