Hi there i'm a newbie to this posting stuff but I'm after some advice on Sat Nav systems for a 07 Yaris, Can i install a TNS 300 system into my new car as I do not want to go to the expense of installing a new system as this costs £1200 and i was thinking of picking up a secondhand unit but need advice as to whether it will fit or not

Any help would be appreciated

Hello and welcome to TOC

It is generally accepted that the aftermarket modern Sat-Nav systems are a better and possibly cheaper option for the Yaris.

Some of the modern Garmin systems can be purchased for less than £200 and offer full colour 3D and postcode navigation.

(My first Garmin system was a Street Pilot III Deluxe and cost just a few pounds under £1000..............how much cheaper and better they are nowdays)

In a word... Yes.

Toyota will fit it for you, or if you are feeling brave do it yourself. I have the instructions in PDF format.

I am not so sure that the TNS 300 system will fit in the New 2007 Yaris as the 2007 Yaris has a different display to the Mk 1.

It might be an idea to check with your local Toyota Dealer

The sat nav units are the same in the Toyota’s as all the displays are all different depending what car model you have, some are colour and some are monochrome displays, the TNS remains the same.

Does that mean I can upgrade my tns 200 for a tns 300, just by swapping the underseat computer?

The Toyota TNS system is unable to use postcode navigation:

Quote Times Online Car Clinic:

"Q. I am trying to update the DVD sat nav system (TNS 300) in my Toyota Avensis. The present unit can find locations using both latitude and longitude and telephone numbers but it has no idea what a postcode is.

My local Toyota garage was unable to help and I searched the internet without luck. Can you help? — MM from London

A. Unfortunately, Toyota does not offer sat nav software that helps the driver find a location by postcode. Some models feature a system where the first part of the postcode can be keyed in to bring up the general area on screen, but then you still have to complete the route by entering the road and house number.

Toyota launches updated DVD maps on a regular basis, although this won’t enable the sat nav system to perform any new tasks, such as searching by postcode. The updated discs cost about £145 and cover most of Europe."

£145 would buy you a reasonable after market Sat Nav system

The original owners of my Yaris had the TNS 200 as an optional extra in 2001, & it was a fair amount to pay. I can remember the eaxct figure, but it was a lot more than a decent stand alone system would now.

But in 2001 there were no Tom Toms etc, that was all that was probably available.

Indeed, Toyota were pioneers in the field of in car sat nav.

Technology has now overtaken them, as now the Toyota Aygo can be specified with a "Toyota Approved" Tom Tom system

The original tns 200 was around £1200 fitted!

But then, dvd recorders were too and now you can get them for under a ton!

The best thing about standard tns is that, apart from a little black lump on he dash, (I put my residents parking permit in front of it) no-one knows it is there so no-one tries to steal it.

Tom-Toms and the like, are all targets of the theiving scumbags that wreak your doors/windows JUST incase you have put it under the seat!

How many cars do you see with the cradle in the window? No satnav?

You shouldn't see anything of the sat nav... It's all hidden:
