Was out in Rav earlier, all of a sudden for no apparent reason, clutch starts to burn/stink and what a stink.

Pedal sank almost to the floor, though did not lose drive. After a couple of minutes it came back up again.

Managed to drive home ok, no noticeable difference apart from lingering stink. Could this be another

dual mass flywheel ready to go ? :(

Dave.

I think that sounds a bit like a master or slave cylinder problem that is holding the clutch partly disengaged. If it does it again just pop the bonnet and see if the master cylinder piston is exposed (extended). You might be able in this case to get the pedal to return by pumping the clutch to its full extent.

The next steps depends how mechanically minded you are.

Good luck mate.

Thanks Anchorman,

Was leaving a local classic/modified car show at a local country park. Being that it has not stopped raining for 3 years

the place was a quagmire (all on grass of course ). A lot of 2nd gear starts, plus my shoes for so muddy that my foot

slipped off the clutch with a jolt. Dont know if any of this was contributory, just have to wait and see. As I said, after a

couple of minutes the pedal came back up of its own accord. just stank for a while.

As for the show, the weather obviously put a dampener on it but very busy. A lot of nice Toyotas there, dont know how

these guys do it but I dont have the time, patience or just cant be ar*ed anymore

Will see how it goes.

Cheers,

Dave.

Dave,

Had this happen to me on my 4.2 when reversing up a narrow steep drive which involved slipping the clutch a bit. At the top it began to smell and the pedal fell halfway but returned after a few seconds and a couple of pumps on the pedal. I put it down to the heat generated by slipping the clutch as everything was fine afterwards.

If the DMF was on the way out I would expect you to notice other symptoms such as slight judder (which you can also feel through the pedal) when starting off on a slight incline and a rattle at low speeds. Hopefully you have'nt got any sign of these and the worst thats happened is that you've worn a few hundred miles off the clutch life.

FINGERS CROSSED.

Clive

Thanks for that Clive, its a bit worrying when your clutch pedal sinks on its own  .

So far no repeat of symptoms, fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Dave.
