Hi all, ever wondered what your Rav 4.2 is capable of, off the road ?

Looks like a good bit of fun but in all honesty the RAV seemed mostly to be just roaring around some wet & muddy flat bits, and I've seen ordinary 2wd road vehicles cope perfectly adequately in such conditions. It seemed to cope with the slopes well enough, to be fair, but it would be interesting to see a RAV really put through its paces on a proper off-road course - I'd love to see how the Active Torque Control and other tricksy bits on the 2006 model (someone else's!) copes. I think that ground clearance and axle articulation would probably be major limitations but, with decent tyres and an experienced driver, I'd like to think that it could be made to give a fairly decent account of itself. It would sure as hell be entertaining to watch anyway :)

A pity the 2006 RAV has no Low Range though. There's a long steep grass slope in one of my fields that my old Rangie just crawls down in Low without the slightest fuss. When I've taken the RAV down it, it rather runs away with itself by the time it nears the bottom - it's not something I've felt like doing very often! I can imagine this lack of Low Range would be quite a limitation on a longer and/or steeper slope. And yet it does have a manual diff-lock even though it seems to me that, if ATC is as smart and fast-acting as Toyota want us to believe, surely the manual activation of a diff lock should be redundant. Presumably there's a good reason and I've just missed some subtle point about ATC...

we used to run an off road weekend, I will try and post some videos, RAV's are very good off roaders, but a little limited on the newer models due to ground clearence etc, book yourself an off road training session with Motor Safari, we used their own off road fields in Wrexham, fantastic fun. Kingo :thumbsup:

Nice pic, thanks for the pointer. However (and I mean no offence) all it shows is that someone was bold enough to take such a new car off-road. Hats off to him for that, as someone said, but it doesn't show that the RAV is actually any good off-road. In fact, most of the mud seems to have been chucked onto it when he had to be pushed out after having got stuck.

Thanks, I'm sure there will be lots in here that would be keen to watch videos of RAVs doing some impressive stuff off-road. A pity that the newer models are less capable off-road (being completely new to RAVs I wasn't aware that ground clearance etc. were reduced in the newer models) but I guess no-one buys them primarily for off-road use.

In my case I just wanted to be able to drive across muddy fields if necessary, and to be able to cope with several inches of snow occasionally. The rest of the time I want an economical and well-behaved road car. It certainly fits the latter requirement very well indeed, but so far that's all I've had the need to confirm.

I've occasionally been tempted to try a "4x4 Experience" day, I'm sure they'd be great fun. Not something I can really justify to myself though, so I've never looked hard enough to scare myself with the prices :) I hadn't realised there were any that used RAVs though - I assumed they all used LRs or LandCruisers etc.

Steve, you still seem unconvinced, maybe these short videos, from your neck of the woods

I believe (there are many more ) will make you want to sell your 4.3 and buy a 4.1.

Oh, and the second one is called "Rav making tracks for Land Rovers to get stuck in" :lol:

I think "uncovinced" is fair comment, as long as that's not taken to mean "dismissive". I'm not saying the RAV isn't capable off-road, just that I haven't yet seen any evidence of one handling anything particuarly challenging.

They certainly show rather more serious intent, but it's still a bit tame for establishing true off-road cred.

Yeah, I noticed that :) But, sniping aside, I would no more rate a RAV as better off-road than a LR than I would rate a LR as more reliable than a Toyota...

You shouldn't assume that a LR on a trailer is broken down - it might just be improving its fuel economy...

Steve, good comeback :lol::lol::lol:

We could dig up more videos for weeks, so heres an idea. Why not try it yourself ? And video it, pick somewhere

without much trees/bushes at sides to minimise damage to paintwork. You can allways power wash underneath.

Sorry, I'm going to have to chicken out on that - I'm curious about what RAVs might be capable of in the hands of a dedicated enthusiast, but I'm not one myself. If I had a 10yo RAV as a second/fun vehicle and there was a suitable site nearby then maybe I'd have a go. But with a new one that happens to be this remote household's only transport? Norrachance!
