Hi peeps, after some sole searching i have come to the conclusion that i may well have to sell the Mr2 as its now very dificalt to drive for me :(

I have been looking at the celica GT4 and have posted a thred over in the owners forum on this site.

I just wanted to know if any one here has had any first hand experience of them and the good and bad points i.e 0-60 and handling?

Thanks

Sam

Guest MrMojo

I've only driven one GT4, it was fizz's,

was ok but seemed heavy, and 'too safe' compared to the tubby, but still an ok drive, know where near as a rewarding drive as a 2, i would myself consider one but only if i really really needed the extra seats !!.

i have had a major operation and the seeting position just inst helping matters, and is unlikely to for some time. Ill miss the Mr2 but it needs to go, i was hoping the celica would fill the hole...

Good points: Handling & Performance. the 4WD lays the power down very well and aids cornering too.

Bad points: 205 quite heavy, 185 very heavy. Therefore acceleration isn't quite as brisk as an MR2 turbo. Fuel consumption high. Reasonably reliable but when things do go wrong they're difficult to work on because everything is crammed into a small space. Suspension on 205s quite expensive to maintain when it gives up. Also if you buy an ST205 you'll have to faff with it all the time; it's the law!

With regard to how nice they are to drive - I prefer the N/A MR2 to the GT4 most of the time; particularly in the dry; it's not as quick but the drive is just more enjoyable because more skill is required. But the GT4 is the business whenever the weather isn't so good, and was awesome in the winter when everyone else was sliding around the GT4 just drove through anything without a care.

Where abouts are you based? If near Nottinghamshire you're welcome to take my C/S for a spin to see how you find the seating.

Have you looked at the Gen 7 Celica? They're about as light as a Mk2 MR2 and handle really nicely even though they're FWD. 190 bhp (ish) is enough to make them faster than most things on the road, and they're very practical too.

thanks t600, thats of great help. I'm coming to a final decision now as regards what car i want, its more than likely going to be a gen 5 GT4 I just have to find one now in my budget!!

I have about 1600 pounds to spend on one and i fear that just isn't going to be enoth

I know the GT 4 is much bigger and heaver than the Mr2 i was just hoping that it would feel to detached from the road if you know what i mean? the Mr2 is very...well you feel everything bump and bend in it and its very rewarding to drive

I live up in Shropshire so im a fair bit away, but thanks for the offer i really appreciate it

You're welcome Sam, if you are in the area or going to any car shows this way drop me a PM.

Can you get GT-4's for that price?

A gen 5? Oh, yes, no problem.

Of course you have to be careful to ensure that it's not going to cost you as much again putting it right, but there are lots for sale at under £2000. Of course having spent lots of money on them owners want 3K plus for good ones, but realistically can they get it? If very well restored then perhaps they can; I know of a C/S going for £5K and it's probably worth it because it's had a nut and bolt restore, but equally have seen plenty for much less. Last week I saw an ST185 that someone had bought of eBay for just over £500 and it looked roadworthy, though probably needed quite a bit of work to make it presentable.

Good luck finding what you want Sam. Make sure you get one that is sound, particularly watching out for rust. As with other Toyotas of that age, the imports tend to be better than the UK cars, but even imports can be dodgy if not cared for. I think the R/C is probably the best buy, but will probably cost £3000 plus for a good one.
