1998 Avensis 1.8 Wagon, 180 000 km

I have no problems starting the car, but recently a new sound has come when I starting the engine. When I turn the key, I can hear a "spinning sound", that wasnt there earlier.

Anybody who has experienced this?

I'm not sure if my starter is about to die, or if I can ignore the sound and keep driving the car..

Is it normal that the starter breaks down on a Toyota Avensis?

You probably have sorted this out by now, but. The spining sound is a small clutch on the starter motor axle, that is slipping. It is supposed to engage when starter is driving the flywheel, and release when flywheel turns faster than starter motor (scenario when engine is already running , but you turn the key to start) This safety clutch is worn out or stuck.
