Disk Pad Replacement

I have a 52 Reg Petrol Auto 5 Dr RAV 4. The front pads are getting a bit thin (3mm), is it worth changing them via the DIY route or are the dealers prices not too bad?

Is the DIY route easy, do you need special tools at all?

How much is all this likely to cost??

I personally think its expensive but that is because I am a mechanic by trade and am not used to paying to have work done on my car.

Whether or not you do it yourself depends on if you are reasonably competent and if you have any tools. I would pay for Toyota pads as the ones for the RAV are made in Japan and are unbeatable for quality.

You can find the instructions for changing the pads on the Toyota Publications website or if you need any other guidance just ask. You do not need any special tools but will need a jack, 12 or 14mm spanner and a 150mm G clamp to push the piston back. The rest is just cleaning bits and pieces.

Thanks for the link and info - I usually do all my own car maintenance so the pad change looks OK. Glad to hear no special tools are needed - I once had an XR2i and you needed an odd sized 9mm Allen Key to change the Pads! (9mm wasn't in any of my standard sets of keys and I ended up having to buy a Sykes Pickevant special at a ridiculous price).

Where's the best place to buy Toyota Pads? - the dealer or is there an online alternative selling genuine parts?

Aide,

IMHO you should go for the genuine Toyota ones (as Anchorman said), that being the case

why not give Kingo (Parts King ) a go. If you register as a TOC member on his site you will

get a discount. ;)

Dave.
