You can program an additional key into the Avensis 1998 - 06/2000 by following this sequence:

Open driver's door and insert programmed black key into ignition. Close door.

1). Within 15 seconds

Switch ignition on and off 4 times.

Switch ignition on.

Open and close the driver's door.

2). Within 20 seconds

Open and close driver's door 5 times.

Remove key from ignition.

3). Within 10 seconds

Insert black key to be programmed into ignition.

Switch on and leave for 1 minute.

Remove key.

Repeat step 3 for further keys.

To exit programming open and close the driver's door.

If your key is grey in colour then it cann't be used to program additional keys. I can cut Toyota / Lexus keys at a very reasonable cost. Email me for details.

If you do not have a programmed black key for the vehicle I can recode the engine ECU. Again, email me for details. Please state model, year of manufacture and engine type (VVTI or not VVTI).

Regards.

I'm a bit confused now. I have a key for my '99 Avensis on which the remote "unlock" does not work, but the "lock" does. I also have a perfectly functioning key.

Both keys will open the doors when used in the lock, but both set off the Alarm Siren when I do this.

If I buy a brand new blank key for an Avensis, get it cut, and follow the instructions (opening doors, closing them, standing on your head etc) will the new key then work for remote central locking? Will it disarm the alarm?

Alternatively, can I easily disable the Alarm Siren altogether?

Have only got one key for my W reg Avensis. The dealers tell me it is £150 to get a spare. Does anybody know anywhere less expensive?

Try Timpson's they can do it for a lot less. They can get the code from your car key and cut you a new one.

I have tried Timpson's. They expalined they could not do it as it has a rolling code, and that it would need to be from the dealer. I told hi th eprice he thought I was having a laugh!

When I asked main dealer about a key he told me about £160, I asked if he was taking the p*&% . He looked at me and said with a straight face "No!" :) I left, as any normal person would.

I had the same problem - only one key.

I'd bought the car as a part exchange from a garagek so never met the previous owner - however I looked up the address on the V5 on www.bt.com, looked up the name and phone number and phoned them up, he had a hunt around and found the spare key + the valet key!

Completed worthless to him, but toyota world bristol wanted £201 PER KEY!!! Daylight robbery!

So I swapped £402 pounds worth of keys for a box of quality street when I went to pick them up!

So my advice is, try to contact the previous owner and see if they still have the keys lying around.

If its a new key with the lock/unlock unit within it try this;

All doors closed. Key not in cylinder

Insert already registered master key in cylinder

WITHIN 15 SECONDS, switch ignition LOCK - ON 5 times

WITHIN 20 SECONDS, OPEN/CLOSE drivers door 6 times ending with door closed

WITHIN 10 SECONDS, Remove master key

Insert new, unregistered key,

WITHIN 10 SECONDS, keep ignition at 'ON' position for 60 seconds or more

TO REGISTER MULIPLE KEYS, insert new key and repeat above step,

TO FINISH, open/close drivers door.

If programmed successfully, engine will start but leave running for at least 3 mins

to ensure communication between key and immobiliser ECU.

It sounds like the alarm is over-riding the central locking system. Try removing the lower dash panel underneath steering wheel. You'll see a black box on the fusebox. This is the integration relay. Disconnect the multiplug and remove the integration relay from the fusebox for a few minutes then refit it and reconnect multiplug, Central locking should work from remote keys now. The alarm takes priority over the central locking thus not locking the car but setting the alarm. Hope you find this info useful.

Hi mate ,

I have Toyota Avensis 2003 VVTI,T4.I ahve got a spare transpodner with cut blade but I can not programm it?.Could you help.My email is tczwoju@o2.pl

Cheers

Wojciech

If you don't need to have a remote in the spare then you can get 'coded' keys probably from Toyota for around £30-40 as I paid £32 for one on my old Primera but just didnt bother having the remote bit in it - after all it is only a spare for just in case, and if you do lose it then get a remote.

Hello All,

Because I had only one master (black) key for my car as most people here I wanted to have a spare one in case I lose the master.

I got exactly the same key (2 button, black - Valeo on the blade, Kostal 433.92 MHz on the case) from eBay with same part number. Had a new blade cut. Replaced the blade on the key, managed to get the remote working. However for some reason I cannot get the new key registered with the immobiliser on my Avensis 1.8 1999 using the Pat's instruction below. Anybody in the same situation?

I noticed that when I finish the step 1 from the instruction below the security LED on the central console comes on which is perhaps to say that the car is now in programming mode.

I could hear a very low clicking noice when I insert the new key for 30 sec ( a relay or something) which is not there when I insert the original key. I assume that the system is trying to programme/read the code of the chip for some time and then it gives up.

Also when I finish step 2 the indicators flash a few times , sometimes 1 sometimes 2 times.

I couldn't find any reference to such flashes.

Could you help please with the following:

1. Does anybody know what these flashes mean?

2. Do I need to erase the old keys first?

3. Anybody knowing what the clicking noise might mean?

4. Any other ideas?

Cheers
