Not sure, but it sounds like it's in 'Limp Home mode'.

I seem to recall reading about this feature in the Avensis forum. Basically the Brains of the car have detected something awry so it limits the available power etc..............so you can at least Limp Home. Hopefully someone more knowledgable can shed a bit more light on it

Good luck

Have you got any mods like a K&N or anything?

Sounds like a sensor has triggered a fault. Fitting a K&N can cause some problems, especially if you mess around with wires to MAF sensors and stuff.

Get it down to your local garage and ask them to put it on the diagnostics.

The computer should then come up with a fault code! ;)

I wouldn't be at all surprised....

There's a fairly recent thread on it.

Link for you to look at.

HI mate,

I was the guy that started the thread on the link above :)

I had the same problem with the lights on the dash, however my CTS didnt enter limp mode! The reason for the lights coming on is all to do with the vacuum hose set-up. You see the Typhoon induction kit, was tested on the US version of the corolla. Which is slightly diffrent to the UK version. I cured the problem by having the typhoon taken out and the car put back to stock by my local toyota dealer! All i had to do was 'buy the mechanic a drink' lol. So i gave him a tenner, job done!

The k and n typhoon kit sounds amazing and looks the part under the bonnet, but if you want my opinion all the hastle for a little bit more noise just doesn't seem worth it! The CTS sounds great when stock anyway, and has the speed to match! So i took a view to just take the k and n out!

I know its probably not what you wanted to hear, sorry!

Mark

P.S: I had a congenuity test done on the car, so i know for a fact that the MAF sensor is fine, as i was told that this could be the problem! It wasn't!

P.P.S: Does anybody want a polished silver K and N Typhoon air intake system lol!?

Common problem with adding any form of induction kit! The MAFF sensor cable is very tight! Very very tight! Think Toyota knew they was gonna be a shortage of copper at a good price lol!

Anyway rewire it back in and your away, oh an take Battery off for about 30 mins, cause that will reset ecu!

Anyway something has got me a little concerned!!! UK86_MarK when you fitted the Typhoon what hoses were you having problems with?

When i fitted my induction kit i had a one-way air valve (its blue) left over which you apparently had to run back into the manifold. Although trying this made no diffrence and i still had lights on the dash!

There is a post on this forum that i posted on the subject that will give you alot more information m8y :)

Someone kindly put photos and everything to try and help!

Ill try and find the link...

Heres the link :)

Check out the photo with the engine bay, and someone is pointing at the one-way valve! This is the vacuum hose that is apparently the problem :)

I really hope this helps!

I know the pipe! It is as you say which is a 1-way valve! What it does is to activate the flap at the back of the air box! If you look at the the top of the air box there is two pipes coming from an electronic switch at the front of the air box! It has a little back nobby thing on it (very technical explanation, i know) Anyway... I can't remember how it is all plumbed in but one of the pipes that goes from this switch creates a vacuum which closes the flap at the back of the air box! The pipe that comes from the engine into the blue valve should go into the back of the air box, basically it conunteracts the suction pipe that comes from the switch and forces the flap at the back of the air box open! All you need to do to it is bend it and cable tie it, that should resolve the problem! However i'm not sure this would cause any serious problems and cause the lights to come on the dash, just a gut feeling maybe there was something more that was the problem! I gather you won't be putting it back on again?

Or turn the key to halfway, then hold the clutch down for 30 seconds?

Well i took the car to my local toyota dealer and had it put back to stock! However if this is the cure for the problem, or if someone has the cure for this problem then im all ears!!! Dont get me wrong i love the Typhoon, just need to get it working properly lol!!!

I know the flap in the air box that your talking about! Always wondered what it did though, always thought it opened when hitting lift to allow more air flow ( that was a complete guess lol)

Have you got a Typhoon installed Rolley??

Cheers

the typhoon system is awsome. i wouldnt wanna go back to stock intake now. im glad its all sorted tho. going take it inton my local garage tomorrow to get the cables extended so no other cables decide to go. hopefully im goin to put her on a rolling road soon to see what the power gains are. really want some Iridium spark plugs fist tho. but insure if they will make any differance. as for the hoses i posted the same problem not knowing what to do with them but now its all sorted and piped back into the inlet.

I have the Typhoon kit on for the last year and a half and never had a problem with it. It sounds amazing wouldnt change it for the world.

So the problem that people have had is to do with the wires leading to the MAF sensor? I know it was a tight fit installing the Typhoon, but as i said earlier i had local Mr T do a congenuity test, when they put the car back to stock, and they proved that all the connections and wiring throughout the car were fine

So just to clarify (sorry i've gone brain dead today as the tube strikes forced me to take train, then BUS lol, its going to be a bad day) what did everyone find was the solution to the problem with the lights on the dash?

Thanks very much to everyone that anwsered this, and previous forums to try and help! I've been on alot of car forums in the past and found the community with this forum has by far been the best! People actually know what they're going on about :P

Cheers

P.S: Hey Whitt, keep us posted if you have your CTS on the rollers, be interesting to know the result!!!

Hi Mark

I don't have the Typhoon Kit I have an AEM slightly modified! Basically I bought a CAI but had problems fiting it! So I got a hacksaw to it and reduced it to a Short Ram lol! Just as effective but not what i hoped! Anyway I will get mine back on soon! I need to get a MAF sensor harness and do a blue peter special cause its a tight fit! I hope to do it soon so I will post a few pics for you to help with the plumbing! Basically eveything that is plumbed into the air box can come off aprt from that one with the blue valve! What you do with that on is pull the blue valve off and cable tie the pipe so that no air can come from it or go into it! When you fit the Typhoon it should bolt in and no pipes should be fitted to it! This was something I noticed on my AEM! their instructions seemed to want me to remove the breather pipe and put it on the AEM! However the UK cars have this breather pipe fitted on the throttle body! I think i'm right in saying its breather! But anyway no piping needs to be done to fit in the Typhoon it should be bolt in and go play!

Hope this helps!

Hey Rolley,

Thanks for the information. If you are going to take pictures when you fit yours then posting them would be great :D

I'll have a look at my instructions when i get home tonight and keep you posted. What do you think of the AEM then?

Cheers

Well it would have been good if it was a CAI (Cold Air Intake). Looked the dogs! But it was not going to fit! For a start the box chamber to fit it in is right behind the Fog Lamp! If you can your hand in there your doing well! So the actual filter was not going to fit in, plus the pipe seemed an inch too short! So was actually missing the box chamber underneath the front headlight! Was a shame because it looked cool! But had to take the hacksaw to it, did think about sending it back but we scratched it trying to get it in!

So... When it was on! It sounded good and it did feel to me like it was more responsive! BUT the biggest shock was going back to stock box! The car took longer to reach 4th gear and it really felt like she was fighting for breath in comparison to it! So yeah was a good filter! I think though in comparsion I should have gone for the Typhoon, for a start it would have worked out about £50-70 cheaper, or the Blitz SUS Power kit cause they have had some good reviews but that would have been about the same price!! AEM do a short ram intake which would have been easier for me to buy rather than cutting mine in half lol!

I would still love to try her with a CAI on and maybe one day I will find one that fits! Because I really do think the engine suffers on warm days! Include that with an engine bay thats roasting hot, all that hot air goes into that filter and isn't giving you the best performance!

Will get them pictures up soon mate!
