Well I have not chosen yet as I still need to test drive the Rav...also need to see the boot space as when we go and visit relatives up north we do tend to fill the car up with stuff ....The avensis just about did the job...but with another littlen on the way we need to be able to take the double buggy up with us....However...if I do go for the xt4 then there will be 2 of us with Red Ravs on this site...only that mine has got the parkingbay gitt protection and a wifes paking aid B)

Any who anyone know if the XT4 have auto dimming reaview mirror (Kinda off topic sry) ?????

Don't worry about off topic to much! There are plenty of Jokers around here who will drag it off sooner or later.

My XT4 doesn't have auto dimming rear mirror, miss it a little from my old car but not a great deal.

Good luck with your test drive.

Have a quick look back a few pages for a topic called mpg, might be figures for a petrol RAV on there.

See, back on topic.

Expect not much better than 30mpg from the petrol (I have a mate who has one). If you can push it out to a diesel you will be impressed with the pulling power and the mpg is circa 40 - 45 on a trip.

I am the other red 4.3 owner and I don't have exclusive rights so welcome on board! I have just got my first knock from a parking bay git (as you very politely say and I am glad I wasn't around when it happened). It is right on top of a rear wheel arch where side protection wouldn't have helped and because it is doubled skined I doubt if dentmaster can get it so thanks for that whoever you are. This made me smile when I watched it and puts a new slant on the old parking bay dents!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y939QyHyhs

As for the wife parking aid, don't knock them, despite my most sneering opinion of them before having this car they are the first item I would spec on any other RAV or similar sized vehicle.

You can but and add that interior mirror and I am pleased otherwise with the spec of the XT4 over the XT3. I do sometimes wish that I had cruise control as the thing wanders up to 90 very easy on the motorway but where do you stop?

I know before anybody says it - T180!

Kingo - how much for the mirror please?

Sorry to hear of your dent Anchorman, I was in Buxton for most of Saturday morning did not see your car.

I had a nasty dent in My Focus ST170 also on a double skin area. Chips Away filled it I could not see a difference after. I think it cost £80 not worth doing yourself.

The video is hilarious

30 MPG...hm I guess thats not too bad...So what does that relate to in miles per tank filling....

I understand the diesels are the favorite choice...however the D4ds are run on belts rather than Chains ( or have I been missinformed???) and the idea of having to fork out a slight fortune for a cambelt change doesnt apeal to me...

Also I dont believe I do enough milage to really benefit the from the diesel...every now and then perhaps twice a year we drive north of the border to visit the wifes family and the rest is just shor comuting and general shopping trips and days out..

Anyway, as I have not signed the dotted line yet I can still choose (depending on cost...somehow I dont think me local Mr T has any D4ds with the min spec I want for abour 16k...)

2.0 D4D is belt driven cam shaft

2.2 D4D is chain driven cam shaft

4.3 has a 60 litre (13.2 gallon) tank so 390 miles at 30mpg. 528 miles at 40mpg.

Cheers

Oh well....hope the limmoed rear screen will keep some of the light down....300squid....for a mirror...that would not just cause world war 3 4 5 6 and on to 10 at my place but the end of the universe....

Think the tint and the manual adjuster will have to do here....

On another note...I have found out that if you have the xt4 you cant upgrade to the touch screen dvd system...

So as the budget wont stretch to a xt5 a xt4 will do the job...

HI

My wife has had a 2ltr Rav since march, this being here third Rav 4(company car) the last two were diesels and excellent. The Rav is excellent but the petrol engine is awful. We use it for towing and when changing gear when loaded up the revs rise dramatically and it sounds awful, revving away during changes, (this also happens during normal driving). We have been in contact with Toyota and apparently this is normal as I quote "the electronics raise the revs to match the gear change." The result is we cannot wait for it to go back as it is pants. We will definitely go for the diesel again next year. Also the fuel economy has never risen above 30 mpg.

Getting a bit concerned here now.... :o

all reviews bar one about the 2ltr petrol have been a bit worrying...

Is the petrol REALLY that bad??? :(

I understand that diesel engines are better if you want to tow things as they have a better torque output than petrols...

However I dont want to use the Rav for towing, just the usuall around town driving and cruising up and down the motorway. The 4x4 might come in handy when we visit relatives in scotland thats about it.... B)

So any sound advise from people who know is more than welcome....:help:

Nightstalker,

You must be in the grip of a very good salesman if you don't mind me saying.

Just out of interest I have just been to the Toyota website and done a NATIONAL used car search for:

RAV, 2.2D4D Less than £18K, less than 2 years old.

And it came up with 57 matches.

Most of these were XT3's but they were priced around £16K.

There were quite a few XT4's and the one that stood out from the list was one in Bristol: XT4, £16.8K with 14,000 on the clock.

There was even an XT5 in the list, £17.5K but it had done 33,000 miles.

If you have been monitoring the poll of TOC RAV owners you will see that 4.3 petrol owners are few and far between.

Diesel is the same price as petrol at the pumps at most places.

If you do want the petrol at least screw this very nice salesman down to the ground! Minimum another grand off!

If he won't play, walk over to the DARK SIDE and feel the FORCE. (sic Chatman)

Dealers don't buy new car stocks in the hope you will come in and buy one, by all means ask for an extra "Grand" off, in the real world, you come in, strike a deal, and the dealer orders your model from Toyota. In other words, we don't have a quota of RAV petrols that we simply have to get shut of. Those days are long gone. Kingo

Thanks for that...

however he has already given me decent discount....(I believe anyway)...

I'm throwing in my vensis which is still on HP and the value of the car is less than whats outstanding ..

He managed to sort figures out so that Im getting the rav for 15995 with 12 on the clock and protection pack...

Think thats ok no???

Nightstalker (sounds like you might be in a similar business to Fuj')

I will try to put things in perspective.

The story of the petrol versus diesel is typical amongst marques - especially now with mordern common rail diesels. They cannot come close to the pulling power or economy of a diesel but there are some advantages;

The petrol is quieter and the five speed box is pretty good (the diesel has a 6 speed box becuase of the limited rev range) and it can be quite notchy. It is also a £1000 cheaper and if you do some calcs based on the 10mpg difference between the 2 you really need to be doing quite high annual mileages to justify the difference in price alone (some like me will prefer the torque and acceleration).

Drive both and decide for yourself. The petrol feels somewhat lethargic compared to the diesel but you might be conent with it. It depends how you drive to some extent.

Paul

You probably have the worst conditions to highlight the weakness of the petrol i.e. towing as this is where the torque advantage would show itself. The rev rise you talk about is done intentionally. To improve fuel efficiency and weight the flywheel is relatively light and the revs would otherwise drop sharply. It could result in a jerky gearchange. This is because when you change from one gear to the next (going up the box) the gearbox would be connecting with an engine that is at idle. I know it sounds a bit strange but by holding the revs at about 1000-1500rpm it gives a much more refined change for the majority of drivers. Try a little experiment. Drive along in say 4th gear then put your foot on the clutch. It will hold the revs up high. Now while still holding the clutch in, push the gearstick into neutral and the gearbox neutral switch will signal the ECU to drop back to idle.

Kingo

I know its not your fault but this is a good example of UK customers being shafted for no other reason than market trends. This is the photochromic mirror in my other local dealer that I will be visiting next week;

http://nextgen.toyotaweb.org/inventory/acc...p;accyId=747856

$199 dollars is about £108 with 6% sales tax but that is fitted so it poses the question "what else are we paying a premium on?" They buy a fully loaded V6 LWB RAV for the same in dollars as we do in pounds and nobody will convince me that it costs any less to sail them to the USA as it does to here. Then MR Brown has to have his "any excuse for another tax" out of it but even so things are not quite right. UK manufacturers know that they can command a higher price and push us fools to the limit.

Like I said I know it is out of your control. Here is the rest of the accessories just for interest;

I tried to take a photo of the dent and I cant very well. It causes a ripple in the reflection but there is no chip. Most people wouldn't spot it but for any of us RAV anoracks it leaps out and shouts!

Anchorman,

Unfortunately I know how hard it is to take photos of dents and scratches on car body work. They never convey the full story that can be seen with the naked eye. I hope you get it sorted soon and sorted well!

Kingo,

I'll not argue with you, dealers are in busy to make a profit, you have overheads to pay, people to employ. And on many different threads up and down the TOC you have argued your point well.

But....I was just making the point, that in line with the general trend towards diesel from petrol for family cars, the demand, new or used, for a RAV 4.3 petrol is so much less than the demand for a RAV 4.3 diesel. And so the price should be lower. I think this is a far point.

I can only imagine that this particular dealer is very happy to see somebody who is interested in this particular petrol 4.3. I am sure they have had plenty of potential buyers look at it and say "If only it was a diesel"

Nightstalker,

Good luck to you and your family, Best wishes. Hope everything goes well with the RAV and with the new arrival next year :baby:

I would love to see a breakdown of the true cost between making a diesel or petrol engined RAV. Is the hike anything like a true reflection or is it another marketing ploy (read that as way of getting more money) :g:

It's funny how most diesels are £1000 dearer than petrols regardless of the volumes!

I cannot justify the price of the mirror, it is just ridiculous! The UK has long suffered from the syndrome of "Not what a product is worth, but what the market will stand" That doesn't just apply to the motor trade, but to just about everything.

Cheers. Kingo

Rob,

Hmmmmmmmmm, me thinks you may be better looking for the last of the 4.2's, one of these-

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/news/publish/Rav_XT-R.shtml

This is the one I've got, 2.0 D4D and I have zero complaints. Some are available with leather, check the spec (auto dim mirror, privacy glass etc).

Cheers,

Dave ;)
