Oil Consumption

Hi all

I have a 2005 1.8 T2 Avensis with just 15K on the clock – everything is fine so far except a tiny drop in oil after 7k from the last service which is normal I suppose.

Just out of interest what is the highest mileage that anyone has achieved without significant oil consumption? Any tips in terms of driving style, etc to minimize the likelihood of it happening? Hoping for some good news here!

Another thing - I occasionally rev the car up to 5000 rpm max to give the engine a clean out so to speak as my wife uses it for short journeys. Is this a good or a bad thing to do?

Thanks

I find the car usually goes between services without the need to add any oil but of course I check it at regular intervals .

The issues with excessive oil consumption occurs at about 40,000 miles but this seems to be a problem on the 2001 -2002 Avensis I don't think it is so much of an issue on the later cars but I am sure somebody else will post if they have been effected

I have noticed Toyota dealers are adding additives to the fuel tank on service now if you want them it is supposed to help with performance and fuel economy I think

There is a known problem with excessive oil consumption on the 1.8 vvti engines, it is caused by gases within the cylinder block contaminating the oil and it burning on the cylinder. You can get a short motor done under toyota warranty, if you havnt got a warranty then unlucky, but you have to prove the car is burning more than a litre in a 1000 miles. toyotekk1

CBCB (Car by car breakdown) on Honest John website on Avensis 1997-2002 review notes that Toyota fitted these engines with a porous wet bore liner.

On another American Toyota enthusiasts site it is mentioned that the ZZ engines needed a prolonged running in period (18.000 kms) and that when engines with the problem were opened up they showed bore wear in the middle of the cylinder but not at the top.

It also noted water pump problems and auxilliary belt tensioner (squealing belt ) problems.

Trouble is these engines are a bit problematic but Toyota is bending over backward with engine replacements etc to help.

I've got the 2002 model 1,6 VVT-i @ 57,5k miles (92000 kms) and it hasn't burnt a drop (fingers crossed) but I change oil every 7.500 km (5000 mls) with Toyota brand semi-synthetic 10W-40. The car has had a pretty gentle life (I've just changed tyres and the pads are still close to half their original thickness) with mainly motorway miles, two or three 60 miles blasts at truly wicked speeds (I needed to test the top speed of the car :o ) and crawling speed in horrendous city traffic.

I still believe that

a. The car is allowed to warm up (I allow a 10 second warm up and until the temp indication is normal I drive very gently)

b. Serviced correctly

c. Sees a variety of driving conditions

it should last a long-long time (hopefully)

Thanks for that. Something positive at last!. The car had only done 15k and I did the first service at 9K. Perhaps I should look at an interim oil change as well. I also try to mechanically sympathetic.

I forgot to add that I left the factory fill oil in to 15.000 kms (10.000 miles) (that's what the owner's manual said) and then went on the 5.000 mile oil change regime with semi-synth at the Toyota dealer. I'm usually changing oil every 5-6 months and oil filter every year.

The HJ website faq recommends this for better bedding in I found out later on.

Toyota have put an extended warranty on these engine that are burning oil i thinks its a 5 or 7 year warranty, but you have to have full dealer service history. one you have had the work done you should notic a massive difference.
