Carina E Manual Gearbox

I have a 93 Carina E 1.6 XLi with 110 000km, which every now and then jumps out of 5th gear while cruising at motorway speeds. It seems to happen when applying throttle in 5th, and I can only recall it happening after driving for some time, i.e. time enough for the box to get warm.

Is this likely to be caused by a problem with an internal gearbox component (selector fork or something), or could it be something a little easier and less xpensive, such as selector cables, gearbox oil or something?

Any suggestions or help would be very welcome!!

Thanks

Hi BigP and welcome to the club!!

I used to have a rolla with the same problem. So it would be good to check the stick because it might be there is someting blocking it. After that, I decided to tight the command bars in the gear box, in the engine bay. That fixed it all.

Good luck!

Cheers

It could also be a defunct engine mount. When you apply throttle the engine will rock due to torque reaction. If a mount is dead it will rock excessively and may cause the linkage to disengage the gear. Only a suggestion but might be worth a check :)

Forgot to mention, on my '94 Carina E GTi I changed the gearbox oil in line with the service schedule (like the good little boy I am). Now the flamin' thing crunches when engaging third gear! Moral: Gearbox was not noisy before changing oil so, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! :censor:

It could be quite simply that uyour gearbox is on its way out, same thing happened to my Carina E and it soon after required a new gearbox, but maybe that was due to the ill fitted clutch from toyota. Thats another story! Hope it isnt the same thing for you, but i have heard a few people suffering from Gearbox problems on Carina Es'.

Anyone else suffered would be interesting to know.
