Hi All

So string length aside. Is it reasonable to expect 200,000 Miles From my D4D Avensis over 5 years. If Dealer serviced and looked after. Its mainly Motorway and A roads. But some times carying a load of stuff. Generaly returning 56mpg average since purchase and goes real well.

Its aD4D of 2004 vintage with 70K covered so far.

Parts so far 6 tyres, Starter motor, and needs front discs soon.

Do other people here Do more miles?

Or anyone servicing Avensis with many miles on the clock?

Of course its reasonable to ssume you can cover 200k in an Avensis D4D, I own a '01 1.6 VVTI Avensis, it has just passed the 240k mark on the clock, I've owned it from new and its never seen the inside of a garage, I've serviced it myself from new (and I ain't no mechanic!), apart from the gear change beginning to feel a bit rough (new linkages will soon be in order) its as good as new! I change the oil/filter regularly and have done the sparks twice, and its a petrol! so the skys the limit with a D4D basically!

With no timing belt/chain to worry you can really push the boat out with service intervals too!

Hope this helps

I think it depends on the the type of driving you do 200,000 motorway miles are going to be less of a strain than driving round a city .

There are people who are taxi drivers on the forum they may post a reply but have a look in your area and see if there are any Avensis as Taxis and ask them if they are happy with the car because they make there living with there car and would not run a car that is not reliable

Hi There

I think 200k is entirely reasonable, so long as you treat the car with some mechanical sympathy, and service it regulaly

CHANGE THE CAMBELT ! at 60k - yes it does have one, the petrols have a chain. For the extra £100 its worth changing the tensioner and wheel at the same time. When I took my belt off at 60k it had very little wear, but the D4D engine is an interference fit i.e. if the belt snaps the pistons will talk to the valves in a very expensive way.

Front discs are an absolute doddle to replace - pattern discs and pads are less than £100. It took me moretime to jack the car up and secure it, than to change the discs and pads.

Worth getting the "Autodata" CD. It contains a wealth of info and tips on maintainence (you can also check if your garage has done everyting on the list ! ). I got mine off fleabay for £6.50 from a chap in Brum

What happened to your starter motor ?

Cheers

Hi, I`ve just read your post and can tell you that 200000mls+ is fairly run of the mill these day`s.

My "other" car is a Astra 2.0dti, and as a privately owned company car I do all my own servicing (even when it was under warranty) and it has just done it`s quarter million miles!!!.

In all that time it has only needed normal service consumables, 1x brake light bulb and 1x Battery.

The oil is changed @ 10000ml intervals and I use 5w40 fully synthetic after using a flushing addative when draining the old oil. There is no timing belt on this one.

It still drives like the day it was new, and never fails an MOT.

I think it`s all down to what your dad used to say "look after it and it`ll look after you!!" and this I suspect may mean staying away from dealers if you are willing and able to do things yourself.

This is my second sutch car, my previous one did 198000 when I sold it and is still going strong.

P S These are my "sensible work cars" we also own a MR2 :yes::yes:

A D4D with a cambelt, that'd be a first!

Just reading through the forums and came across this one.

leem6 I may be misunderstanding what you are saying but the D4D does have a cambelt.

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick

No worries

Leem6 will discover that he has a cambelt around 100,000 miles when he hears a snapping noise, closely followed by the (very expensive) sound of valves hitting pistons.

I wonder if he'll be taking the p*ss out of me then...................

Hi i'm a taxidriver and my Avensis has done 280k with no major problems, its a 1998 and it's a petrol.

For me there is no bigger test for a car then to be a taxi as you are constantly carrying weight and doing round town miles, fair enough clutch has been replaced and other wareable itims but still the same engine and g/box.

It blows away the Skoda, V.W passat, mondeo's etc so stick with them, my advice.

Glad to hear this, first read I wondered why the glove box was still original!! Guess the gearbox will be the same as the D4D diesel mines the 5 speed.

The Toyota was purchased for reliability as the previous car a Vectra 1.9cdt, 6th gear would fail after 400miles+ in a day if prolonged used was made of 6th, I had 4 g/box's in 80K and got rid of it for this and wheel bearings, brake fail 3 times one ECU two turbo's and doors not locking Yes under warrenty but you never knew if you'd get there. Lots of hire cars...

Any more of you running D4D Avensis high milage??

Hi guys...

Just reading through... I got a friend who works for courier company .. he's got Avensis D4D... 03 reg. 180 000 on the clock... like the guys said- get that Timing belt replaced every 60k and no problems! Few times he done gearbox oil as well... makes gearshift smoother.

He was told by Mr T. that any VVTi engine since 1999 got timing chains (no need to replace) but all diesel engines got belts (every 60k or 5years).

Hi All,

Just been reading through all the reply's and thought i would mention that I don't see why any of or Avensis's should not reach the 200k+ as they are the most reliable car I have come across, I have a 1999 T reg which was purchased ex lease after 6months, it had a complete new clutch installed on day of purchase and has run like a dream ever since, I too service it myself with the help of 'HAYNES' workshop manual. So far so good, it's had the normal stuff changed ie: sparkplugs, tyres etc and only 1 cambelt but reading the reply's it will be having it done shortly.............happy motoring...........as they say 'Everthing thing keeps going right TOYOTA'

Hi there. Mine is similar age and mileage to you and I'm hoping for the same. No idea how you get that MPG though as mine does 46 average - don't believe the on-board computer, it lies!

keep the oil changes regular and double check the servicing. Mine had a 60k and they forgot the cambelt, then Mr T tried to make out that it didn't have one. The engine should do that mileage no problems, clutch will be expensive to replace and gearbox will wear out at some stage.

Definatly 56mpg, actual is different from the computer 56mpg is a calculated mpg from fuel in litres using 4.54 litres per gallon and miles traveled from the odometer. I agree that the on board computer lies some times its in the 80s others its in the low 50s once it even got to 49. Running on Tesco fuel when B100 Bio diesel is not available.

Its average is 620 miles per tank mostly A roads and Motorway driving rarely go over 75. Tank meaning 50 litres never seem to get more than that in the tank even though is supposed to be 60L, But when your filling from drums 25L per drum 50 is ok.

Oil and seriving done by the dealer at the moment. So hope to keep it for a few years.
