Evening folks

Earlier on today I replaced the pretty rubbish gear knob in my Aygo Black with a nice shiny silver Richbrook. Looks very nice indeed.

I also bought a Richbrook anti-theft aerial, but it's left me a bit befuddled.

I unscrewed the ridiculously long aerial that came with the Aygo, and the new one screwed in in its place. Where's the anti-theft side of it ? Surely someone can just come along and unscrew it ?

Am I missing something ? Did I not put it on correctly ? (the enclosed instructions were pretty poor it has to be said)

If anyone has replaced their aerial I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers

UPDATE - I worked it out finally

How? Was there a grub screw or something?

I saw this post and have seen so called anti theft arials before, along with dustcaps etc and wondered, do people ACTUALLY nick these things? Is it a common occurance?

I know kids have nicked my motorcycle dustcaps, to put on their cycles as they were chrome and shiney (magnet to kids) but I have never heard of an arial being swiped before!

Again, I have heard of people nicking Wiper Blades and thought "how sad is that"? There is no guarantee they will be better then the ones they are trying to replace and they are not THAT expensive!

Finally, do you get as good a reception on these shortened arials? Toyota and others must put long 'uns on for a reason, not just to make you change 'em!

Well, it dawned on me that the threaded screw that was attached to the bottom of the aerial had to come out. Once it was out I could see that there was a hex head at one end, so using one of the supplied Allen keys I was able to screw it in tightly to the fitment on the roof. The aerial then screwed on to this.

On the body of the aerial there are 2 small grub screws - one to hold the rod in place and one to tighten onto the screw attached to the roof.

Hope that makes some kind of sense.

When I first bought my Aygo I changed the aerial to a "bee sting", no-brand model - it was poor for reception.

This Richbrook is 13cm in length and reception is perfect.

It does come with 2 rods of different lengths, but so far the wee one is OK for me.

I got black to go with the car - bought if from a very reputable seller on eBay.

I wouldn't want to give the neighbours a chance to laugh at me for taking pics of the car, so I intend to wash her tomorrow and I'll make a point of going for a scoot out to the middle of nowhere to take a few pics, particularly since I've added/changed a few things recently (rev counter, door pins, gear knob).

My Dad once had the coat-hanger arial stolen off my Granny's ancient old Lada.

If something looks interesting on a car thats nickable someone will nick it. If it looks standard then they wont. So why bother changing it?

Aye, but that's why you should replace with anti-theft items.

The aerial that's supplied by Toyota is ridiculously long. I don't like the look of it so I've upgraded.

I've also fitted a set of spinning valve caps and they've already paid for themselves by making me laugh heartily as a wee blurt tried and tried to nick them (no doubt for his bike) but gave up, empty-handed.

Here's a pic of the aerial, plus a few other snaps (click on image for larger view)

Pictures removed due to pornographic nature. Absolutely disgusted that you could post such filth on a family forum.

very nice. although the osram light in the glove compartment doesn't really take my fancy. The gearknob and pins look great. the ariel isn't completly black and is what i am looking for.

How much did you pay for the tacho?

I thank you :P

I only stuck it in there a couple of weeks ago and as yet I've not used it, but with the nights drawing in I'm sure it'll see some action.

I can't decide whether or not to get a glove box lid to hide it.

A shark fin aerial is fitted on my Aygo. I hid an external GPS attenna beneath it, and it pretty impossible to nick without destroying it. I think it compliments the triangular shape of the headlights.

Does the aerial also double-up for the remote locking? Had my car 14 months and not even tuned the radio yet!

I NEVER listen to the radio and was wondering if there'd be an adverse effect of just taking it off altogether.

No, I don't think so. I think the remote locking sensor is within the front door cavity.

If you remove the aerial completely the only adverse effects may be water leakage. You will need to fill the hole left on the roof. I used dynamat (or any bitumen backed tape) to seal the hole from inside the car, and clear silicone sealant on the exterior. The 3M tape that the fin uses is good, but not totally weather-proof

I plan on getting an internal window mounted aerial instead, mainly for radio traffic info.

Hi folks

I just felt compelled to bump this thread so I can defend myself.

I haven't been browsing here for a while but tonight I logged in to my account and found a private message in my Inbox from a moderator.

He ate the face off me for posting !Removed! on a family forum !!

If you look at post #11 of this thread, I had at one point attached some pics of my car, taken on a Sunday afternoon after I'd washed it and had it looking lovely.

I believe the problem arose because the site I used to host my images has recently gone to pot, so I'd say for some reason they are responsible for !Removed! images showing instead of my Aygo Black.

So please believe me when I tell you that I DID NOT POST FILTH ON A FAMILY FORUM !!

Cheers and goodnight

I'd rather see !Removed! than an Aygo

I think it's rather sad to accuse someone of posting

!Removed! for pics that had been up for allmost a year...

I'd also like to see moderators' comments bracketed,

so it's clear its a moderators' comment...

As for rather seeing !Removed! than an Aygo;

my Aygo has nicer curves :D

If you are going to Mod a forum you should at least indicate what you've done and who did it.

I did wonder what pics I'd missed when I saw the post, I figured someone had got their GF to pose next to their car for the pics and some OTT mod had took offense.

Hello again folks - here's the content of the PM I received (bad spelling included). It came from "Davy" (a.k.a. cfc1):

Hello PearlJam

1st of all I am absolutely discusted at what I saw when browsing the Aygo forum today, this thread in particular....

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...st&p=670398

Can you explain to me how PORNOGRAHIC images appeared in your post?.. this is something we take very seriously at TOC.. this kind of thing won't be tollerated.

You may or may not get to defend yourself, it just depends on how soon you read this PM.. this matter is now being discussed with the moderating and management teams.. you may find yourself being banned.

Davy.

As yet I've had no response to my response - I was shaking with rage whilst replying and it took some effort to keep it reasonably civil I can tell you !
