Electrical Gremlins On 1999 Avensis Hatch

Having recently bought a secondhand Avensis because of it's reliability record. I'm now disappointed to find a few electrical faults. I would appreciate help with:

  • Electric Sunroof: You can only open it horizontally by raising it vertically first
  • Interior Light: Doesn't work on the setting for opening doors. Bulb and connections are OK as it works when switched to 'On'. Fuse is OK.
  • CD Player (Sony WX C57OR): Takes many attempts for CD to play once inserted. Makes a whirring noise as if something's not engaging. A real pain to take a CD back out. Anyone know how this unit comes out?

Hi,

I don't know about the other issues but the interior light on mine stopped working too, it turned out to be the switch on the passenger door. The switch broken in half and come appart. This was not evident from the outside as the rubber cover stayed in place. A second hand switch from a scrappy sorted it out.

Many thanks for the input and advice. Unfortunately I've just checked and all the connections are like new. Also checked the fuses down by the driver's door - no problems there either. Somewhat baffled.

Hi

I can help you on the stereo front.

I reckon the laser's worn out. They don't particularly like playing CDR's... despite what anyone says, they're a tiny bit smaller and a tiny bit thinner in most cases.

To remove the unit, take the very thin black plastic surround off. Put your fingers down the gap (like you're scratching it) and pull. The surround will come off around the player, heating controls, and vents. Pull down the rear view mirror and it'll stop the surround coming down on you.

The unit will be supported by 4 screws in either corner. Unravel and out she comes. I've done this so many times i reckon i can do it in 20 seconds.

Buy a new double din unit either from a shop or eBay.

Good luck!

Many thanks for the advice, I'll pop the unit out and check whether's it damaged/can be fixed or get another as you suggest.

Thanks again.

The interior light problem is almost certainly a switch, very common replacement, the earth to the switch must be clean too, don't forget to clean it up before discounting the switch

Kingo
