Disaster Water Leak

Well i did what all good TOC owners should do and gave the girl a service on Sunday. During the process i did the coolant change and flushed the engine and radiator. Thought i'd give rapid flush a go first and then flush and fill with coolant. All went great and i was very satisfied by the end of the day. This morning i got up and i had coolant all over the drive, after refilling i've goy a leak at the back of the water pump, never been there before. I've spent all day trying to seal it to no avail. What do i use? Will i have to take the pump off and does that mean engine out? I'm a bit angry with myself for using that stuff. not a good idea for the future.

Sorry to hear that; I can't say I've heard of such a thing happening before.

I wonder if perhaps the previous owner had used some Radweld or similar to correct a problem and the flush removed it? If that were the case, then maybe you could reseal it with more Radweld, though that's always a bit of a risk.

Alternatively, if it has destroyed some seals, then perhaps you have a case against the manufacturer of the flush; though I guess it could be difficult to prove that the problem wasn't already there.

Good luck; sorry, can't offer any advice on replacing the pump, though I would say that I'd be amazed if changing the water pump and its gaskets needed the engine out; it's a part that manufacturers must know will fail eventually so they should have allowed for reasonably easy replacement surely.

One other thought - isn't there a drain tap on the block somewhere near the water pump; is it possible that that is the cause of the fault if you used it when you emptied the system; perhaps it hasn't closed up properly. Water can so easily move about and look like it's leaking from somewhere other than where it really is getting out.
