Prius Vin Numbers

Does anyone know how to tell the year of manufacture of a Prius from the VIN number? I've recently had a dealer tell me that my car was manufactured a long time before it was registered. When challenged, he claimed it was a mistake on his part but I'd like to make sure.

You cant do it yourself, but if you PM me the VIN number I can give you the build date, or any dealer can for that matter. In years gone by, manufacturers made thousands of cars and put them in fields until somebody bought one! Those days are long gone, but it is still possible to have a car sitting in a compound for a long time before it's sold. I would'nt expect your Prius to have been around for long. Kingo

1st digit: Country (J=Japan)

2nd digit: Manufacturer (T=Toyota)

3rd digit: Vehicle type or the manufacturing division (D=Passenger car?)

Vehicle Description Section (VDS) - KB20U or KB22U for US

4th digit: Engine Family (K=1NZ-FXE 1.5L 4cyl DOHC)

5th digit: Chassis Family (GUESS - B=4 door Sedan? 5dr hatchback?)

6th digit: Generation (2=second - NWH20)

7th digit: GUESS - 0=Side airbags, 2=NO Side airbags

8th digit: Unknown (U=Prius?)

Check Digit (CD)

9th digit: Check digits, this is a single calculated number or letter used to verify the accuracy of transcription of vehicle ID number

10th digit: model year (4=2004)

11th digit: manufacturing plant (0=Tsutsumi?)

12th-17th digit: actual serialized manufacturing number for the plant

You might have 4th and 5th digit reversed.

Prius VINS:

4th digit: Engine Family (K=1NZ-FXE 1.5L 4cyl DOHC)

5th digit: Chassis Family (GUESS - B=4 door Sedan? 5dr hatchback?)
