Too Much Oil

I have just changed my oil with Mobil 5W-30ESP. I seemed to have overfilled by about 1/4 of a litre . Does this really matter as I would like to avoid having to drain the excess out. The dipstick shows just a little over the full mark I am not an expert but I have heard all sorts of problems with oil seals going and oil foaming happening.

Thanks for any advice...................

Yes it really matters!! Drain the excess, don't cut corners...

Had a mate did that with a swift gti. It spat the head gasket!! Besides, everytime you drop oil outta the sump, it gets rid of some of the crud lurking in the sump. So do yourself a favour, nominate a washing up bowl for the job and do it!

What redneck said. I did this on my first car and as soon as i started the engine *poof*. head gasket, pistons, spark plugs we full of oil. Luckily there was a garage about 50 yards away, had to drain the oil and clean out the spark plugs to try and get the engine started to burn the oil off the pistons.

The excess oil has to go somewhere, usually out through an oil seal, but you can be unlucky and have the pistons produce a "Hydraulic effect" When that happens............something has to give!

My mates Mrs once asked me to pop around and look at her Allegro! No that's not a euphamism for her :censor:

Anyway, she had been topping up the oil a lot, and wondered if I could have a look. I dipped the oil and it was right up to the "Ring" of the dipstick. I asked her how much she had put in and why. she said, Oh I put a bit in every day........Why?..........I thought I needed to.......................She was topping up with a bit of oil everyday, until the point where it was overflowing out of the did stick, and you know what?..........I dropped about 3 Litres of oil out of it, fired it up, drove it down the road and it was fine :eek::eek: Aahhhh the old Allegro..........

Kingo

Thanks for reply. Would 1/4 Litre too much really blow head gasket ?. I thought cars were a bit tougher than these days and what I remember from my previous main dealer services is that they always seem to overfill a bit. Any idea how much extra you could get away with ?

I'd overfilled mine the other day, registered as not much about, put some in... rechecked. slightly up.. put some more in... massively over.

Dropped about a spare litre out, but was still about a quarter of a litre... been fine... burns oil anyway.
