Is This Correct?

So today I pull the key out of the ignition. I then accidently press one of the electric window buttons and to my surprise the electric windows still works when the ignition is off. Is this correct, or is there a fault?

Can somebody try this in there car? I know the brake lights work when the ignition is off (My old Primera did it) but electric windows?

Thanks in advance

P.S It's a 2004 T3-X.

Yes, this is the same as my Avensis. The windows work for about half a minute if I do not open a door.

By the way, since you are wondering about the functionality of your windows, you may also check that the rear windows work correctly. My rear Avensis T25 (facelift) windows have an accident-prevention mechanism. I start with one of the rear windows fully open and then pull the trigger to "automatically" fully raise the window. I then quickly and CAREFULLY try to stop the window from raising. If my window is correctly calibrated it will automatically stop and retract backwards. Rarely (two times per year), my windows loose their calibration and I have to recalibrate them (very easy to do so).

WARNING: I have to warn you that the way I test my rear windows is DANGEROUS and may damage the window. Check your manual to see if your rear windows have this safety mechanism. If you do try to test the mechanism, be VERY carefull not to harm yourself (in case the mechanism is not working). Do not press hard on the windows or you may damage them. The window should stop raising with only a small amount of presure.

lets have a poll -

FRAPE - conciencious parent or window nerd !

(just off to do mine............ :ermm: )

Although not all windows do this, it is indeed a safety feature and not a fault. It arised (as usual) from some smart a@@e American getting his head stuck in an electric window and suing the car company!

Heard it before? McDonalds hot drink, burning? :o

Crashing motorcycle as side stand was down when riding?

You name it, some fool Yank has done it and sued for their own incompetence!

Out U.S. cousins are the reason we have airbags, seat belts, plastic switches, window winders, etc, that break on impact.

Dunno whether to love 'em or hate 'em for it!

:o

My personal favourite was the guy who sued Winnabago (sp?) for crashing his when he set the cruise control and then went in the back to make a drink! :)

of course your right, there is a very serious side to this.

a very sad story - i have a young lad myself and i am very cautious of locking my windows.

Weirdorama  i did this a couple of days ago and wondered whether the electrics were playing up, didn't realise they had a timer. What's the point of it anyway ?

I would guess it was to eliminate the old "Wait a minute, I haven't closed my window, put the key in the ignition again please." phrase. Although my Mondeo before the Avensis had total closure which also eradicated this problem in a different and handy way.
