D4d 2002 - Losing Power On Acceleraton

Hi,

Avensis D4D Vermont Sept 2002 - in the past week the car has starting losing power on acceleration in every gear but first.

Thought it might have been a bad fill of deisel but that was ruled out and a change in fuel filter made no difference.

When changing through gears and accelerating the revs increase to a max of 3000 but there is just no turbo kick, you can feel the car jumping and biting looking for the power and then all of a sudden it will come and then disappear again, in 5th gear and cruising on the motorway the car will sit at a steady 70mph but all the time you can feel it jumping trying to get the extra power when the foot is down on the pedal - during this stage fuel consumption on the trip is halfed when it is acting like this.

Then you can get a stretch of driving where it is fine and acceleration is there and fuel consumption is spot on.

Anyone had similar issues?

Have you checked the Air Flow Meter on top of the air filter box.

This can cause this kind of behaviour...I had this similarly on Tuesday this week. Mr T diagnosed a faulty Air Flow Meter...My car is fine when warmed up though just a bit sluggish when cold in the morning....

not checked the airflow although every mechanic I talk to reckons airflow and turbos never go on these D4D - always a first time i suppose...

would the airflow throw on the engine management light - as I am seeing no light!

I saw no light on mine. Only serious issues turn that on....

Idea's

What about EGR Valve sticking? could this be a missfire from a blocking injector due to poor fuel, Someone recomended a fuel cleaner elsewhere on this forum.

If the fuel consumption has incresed where is the fuel going is the dipstick level going up? or blacksmoke out he back?

My D4D had a misfire from low revs to about 2000 rpm but this cleared after using Bio diesel, But reved over 3k on demand so its not the same symptom.

Rav 4s suffer a similiar problem, most people replace the fuel pump however it is only the two valves on the back of the fuel pump. The valves are available separately for Ravs but strangely not avensis', they are the same valves so it is quite possible to use the Rav ones. Its quite a straight forward diy job you do not need to remove the pump.

ended up being a valve on the fuel line controlling the pressure - since fitting yesterday it has been ok - fingers crossed!!
