You need to look inside the bonnet underneath the panel that the wiper spindles protrude through. You'll see a linkage connected to a motor. This may be hidden under a plastic cover - I can't recall the exact layout on the Carina, but most twin blade setups work to pretty much the same principle.

If both wipers are, as you say, loose and floppy the most likely explanation is that the link from the motor to the main linkage is disconnected in some way. It'll probably have a ball joint at the linkage end which may have popped out, and a hole that fits on the splined motor shaft at the other; that end is normally secured with a nut, and perhaps that has become undone.

Either way, you need to figure out what is disconnected, and then see whether it just needs re-connecting, or whether it needs to be replaced.

I don't know which bits of the linkage can be replaced, or if perhaps you would need to buy the whole thing if it's damaged. Parts-King can probably advise.

thanks very much for the advice.

i visited several scrapyards to try and get a replacement, but every carina had the wiper linkea\ge removed, sinse found out it is a common problem.

had to go to main dealer to get a new one the price i pais to get it supplied and fitted was £216.00

They are a common item to go, especially in winter when when you don't bother to lift the blades off the screen first!

Anyway, they cost about £100, you have to have the full linkage (with wheelboxes attached) The plastic ball and socket joints wear out and the linkage falls apart, not too bad a job to fit, I would expect it to be about an hours work

I encountered an identical problem in the week - one wiper working, the other loose and floppy.

I opened up (as per Haynes manual) and found that a nut had dropped off and the plastic ball and socket has worn away. Bearing in mind this is an 11 year old car I have simply bodged it up with a split pin, until I source a suitably sized nyloc nut and bolt.

Toyota want EUR140 for the linkage, and are uncertain whether they can still get them. My local scrapyard wants EUR40. But I'm happy with my bodge for the time being - after all - it doesnt rain very often in Ireland B)

Thanks to all for the excellent advise in this post.

Hi All,

This is a very common problem on the Carina E, one cheap way that I have seen done is to drill through the ball joint and put a bolt with a nylock nut through it. Just dont over tighten it.
