2001 Avensis D4d

I have recently purchased a 2001 Avensis D4D Vermont. Initial opinions I have of the car are that it is what you would expect of a Toyota as far as reliability and engineering are concerned, and I am also finding the engine nice and responsive, for an 85000 mile car. My main concern is that I am beginning to read on the forum about costly flywheel issues with this particular model. Is this still a relatively rare occurrance,or is it something that I really need to get looked at? I certainly cannot seem to fault the transmission, other than a fairly heavy clutch (is this normal?). I also have a small water ingress in the boot - any suggestions on this would be helpful.

Cheers

Tony.

A Heavy clutch on a diesel Avensis is a first sign of a worn clutch. It is not possible to assess the dual mass fly wheel untill the gearbox is out. Having said that i would not do anything untill the clutch starts slipping or gear change becomes a problem.

My Avensis went to mr "T" for a service they said the clutch was heavy and changed it for me even though I had not mentioned or even noted it. I did drive a Yaris for the two days it took to replace the clutch, this Yaris clutch was extreemly light and needed to be pushed into the carpet to start the car, However when I got back into the Avensis it seemed heavier than the Yaris. On reflection I think the Avensis clutch used to be heavier the further down the clutch pedal was pushed. The flywheel wasn't replaced.

The clutch on the D4D is heavier then the rivals in its class.

However the problem with the flywheel is a comman problem

It will cost you about 800£ to fix it the problem occurs.

You will hear a significant kocking sound from the engine if it has a worn flywheel.

It all depends on how you drive the car, Try not to accelrate too hard, and use the correct gears.
