Carina E Transmission Removal..

has any here removed the transmission on a carina e 1.8 7A-fe ? does the engine have to come out? any tips would be greatfully recieved.

No the engine can stay in. This is fully covered on the Haynes Manual. I would advise the following:

(i) Make sure that you replace both drive shaft seals. They are easily damaged and are likely to leak when the unit is replaced. Best to replace them whilst the trans is on the bench.

(ii) it is possible (and could be easier) to remove the drive shafts whith the wheel hubs still attached to the outboard shaft splines. You will need an assistant if you do it this way.

(iii) You will snap some nuts when you remove the underbody mud shields. It is best to replace these using cable ties.

(iv) without an engine hoist you will need two trolley jacks - If you have time, fabricate a 'table' which can be strapped to the jack under the transmission. The Trans is difficult to keep square and having extra support enables the refitting to go much smoother.
