Coolant Replacement?

evening all.

i booked my Avensis in for a 70k service (basically an oil change) and they have recommended that the coolant be changed as well. They say that it should be changed every 3 years or x miles. my 1998 celica had long life coolant that was never changed or needed to be.

Does the coolant need to be changed on these D4D engines? if so, when? I thought there was a red one and a blue one although i can't remember which one is the long life.

anyone know?

thanks

PS, oil change/minor service is £128 and coolant is £48 extra.

I just found the manual and its 40k then every 2 yrs or 20k unless you have super long life coolant then its 10yrs or 100k. So mine should have been done at 60k.

NEVER EVER USE BRADFORD TOYOTA (WEST RIDING)

That is what my handbook says. I recently had it done at a 4 year service together with the brake fluid. The main advantage, and I'm no mechanic, is that flushing the coolant system will remove any dirt that is in the system slowly damaging your engine and will ultimately give you a longer life in the car. If you are planning on keeping it for a while I'd think about having it done.

Your Celica had a coolant called "Forlife" This coolant name implied you never need change it, you do, it needs changing every 3 years. You were lucky never to have frozen up! You would have done if we had had a hard winter.

There are 3 types of coolant, Red, Green and Pink. Red was fitted in all Jap built cars, Green in UK built cars, and Pink, long life coolant in newer models. This needs changing every 10 years and is a super bright pink colour and not dark red (like that in Jap built cars) New coolant has a very high boiling point and a very low freezing point, it might look like it doesnt need changing but is it worth the risk in a harsh winter?

you say it should have been done on the 60k service.... did you pay extra for it to be done as it isnt included in the price of the service.

you can get coolant strength testers or take it somewhere and get them to check it for you.

i had an old car which the engine coolant froze solid (block/head/rad/pipes etc) took days to thaw out and never ran properly afterwards...poss cracked block or head.

As kingo has posted.. the different coolants have different colours and lifespans but its always worth checking just incase they arent upto the job still.

Every service i carry out i check the coolant strength (even on first 10k services) just to be safe.
