White Van Men

I used to think people were a litte harsh on them but now i don't.

I live at the end row of some tall terraced house, at the side is an alleyway leading towards a antiques salvage yard. Usually i park my car on the other side of the alleyway a few feet from the corner because quite a few cars come in and out from the main road. Yesterday a white van came out at some speed and clipped the front bumper on the drives side. It will need replacing.

Luckily i looked out of my window at the exact time it came out because the ba***** just drove off.

It's not just white van man though...............sad, but you can't really trust anyone to give a toss about anything but themselves nowadays !

Unlucky mate. Good luck with the repairs .

Sadly not just white van man drives off, being in this job, I see cars everyday who have suffered from a drive off, the latest two were, A Hiace van owner who had his mirror smashed off by a guy going too fast too close, failed to stop so he chased the car to a school, where the driver got out, he was a teacher, thought it would be knock for knock so just drove off! Second one was an old lady who reversed into a customers Corolla, not just a corner or a bumber or anything, but broadside into the two nearside doors, smashing the glass of the rear door with such an impact. She drove off and when the customer caught up with her she said, Oh I thought I heard a noise, geeeeeez :censor: :censor: :censor: What are these people on? Not just white van man you see doing this illegal act!

Kingo

I didnt get his details but i remember what the van looked like, the reg starts with S6 too and i'm pretty sure it comes there quite often so i should be able to find out by the end of this week. There should be some damage on the right side too.

I just hope he admits it when i find out.

Does anyone know generally how much this could cost? I'd need a new front bumper, headlight case and the right front panel respraying.

Heh, at least some people in this thread have some luck :)

I clipped a wing mirror passing a car once... looked back to check it was alright, looked fine... but i parked up... and walked back to the car to check i hadn't broken anything just to be sure.

Fortunately i hadn't, just moved it but i don't believe in ruining other peoples stuff and wandering off.

Any laborer type person in a company vechile... couldn't give a BEEP about other people's cars.

Some ****** in an electricians van type car thing was doing about 20mph into a petrol station through the pumps with my T180 in one lane; he came so close to nipping the side i would of said something about his stupid driving if it wasn't for the fact he had a passenger and another car van parked up.

Like some of the guys earlier in this thread, I have an honest streak. I did a similar thing as I was driving a hire car round a tight residential back street in Richmond. I misjudged and scuffed the corner of a parked car. I was in a brand new Focus but it shrugged off the incident unharmed, being made largely of plastic as it is. The other car, an older Escort, if I remember correctly, was one that had had lots of attention to keep the paint and finish smart.

The fact that it was an old car made me think for a second; "Oh, they wont mind, it's old anyway".

In that same second I changed my mind and realised that this was a very poor attitude to take. Whether the car was new or not was not the point. The point was that I had damaged someone else's property and could not make any excuse because it was all down to my misjudgement of the corner I had just turned.

I could still have driven off as there was nobody nearby. I didn't though. I left a piece of paper with my 'phone number under the windscreen wiper and went about my business. Sure enough, I got a call from the owners.

To cut a long story short, I asked for them to get an estimate for repair and call me back. When I got the call a couple of days later I got a reasonable quote back (£70ish) for what's now known as a "smart" repair. I offered to send a postal order to the value of £20 each week for three weeks and a £10 one to finish up. Because this cut across all of the "red-tape" of taking names and details, etc. it was accepted gratefully and at the end of the month, all depts were cleared. I never had any comeback, and I know that the owner has not suffered from my negligence.

Bottom line: I now take far more care when learning the limits in a different vehicle to what I usually use and there is at least one car owner out there that doesn't think all other motorists are b'tards.

Sorry your "drive-off" didn't feel it necessary to assess the damage that they'd done. Better luck next time.
