Problem With The 'lift' On My Vvtli

I have a celica 190 and I'm having intermittent problems with the power kicking in when it gets to 6,000rpm/6,200rpm.

Most the time this is great and I get a real posotive kick when the revs get to the desired level. However, sometimes this doesn't seem to kick in fully and I get like a lag up to 8,000rpm. it does go but just without the injection of power. This is especially noticibe in 3rd gear and annoying when I'm trying to get the max out of it. I've taken it to the dealer but they seem reluctant to help. They stated the obvious, 'is it warmed it up, is the oil topped up' etc, but its none of these. I think they might be reluctant to investigate as the car is still under warrenty with them.

Can anyone pleeeeeeeeeeease help? Does anyone know what might be causing it?

cheers

Ben

Probably, though by no means certainly, lift bolts. If it is those then easily replaced. £68 I saw recently on Celica-Club

Is Dealer a Mr T? If so I believe they charge back Toyota for warranty work. Remember you can take it to any Mr T for warranty work.

That said, first time I had problem with my 190, dealer wouldn't accept it; but that was years ago when Toyota were still claiming that these engines were 100% reliable.

Lift bolt problems (and other issues) now generally accepted as fairly common.

Good luck, I'd be tempted to see what their diagnosis is because your problem could be something else, but don't take any 'these engines never go wrong' ***** from them. They do go wrong, lift bolt faults being particularly common, but most problems easily fixed, and in any case should be covered by the warranty. Sometimes difficult to convince them there's a fault though, especially if it's intermittent.

Hello mate,

This sounds like the lift bolt issue, see my post regarding this as i have changed mine just last weekend for £68 with a small Toyota dealer.

See the photo and the wear that occurs with these bolts.

personally i was experiencing intermittent weak lifts in my Corolla T Sport.

Get it checked out before they break off, apparently if they shear it costs ALOT to get it fixed.

Good luck.

Ah, it was on here; knew I'd seen that price somewhere - thought it was on CC. Looks like a good price for the work involved.

It seems like there has been an influx of lift issues lately... Is it that the general age of 2ZZ engines are now old enough to have problems?

Would be interesting to know what's the general mileage of 2ZZ's out there to see what is the life expectancy of these bolts.

Result; glad it's sorted.

Reminds me of getting mine back after its lift problem was sorted. I didn't know how much I'd missed it.
