Diesel All The Way

I know it's French but it's one in the eye for the tree hugging, sandal wearing floppy hair green brigade.... :P :P :P :P

Diesel is the future long live the black stuff........ :D :D :D

(these are my opinions and mine only so don't get all ratty and upset if you wear sandals and have floppy hair and like the odd tree or two)

Victory in Silverstone’s 1,000km British Empire Trophy sportscar race made it five wins from five starts for the French team. The victorious 908 HDi FAP prototype – shared by Frenchman Nicolas Minassian and Ferrari’s Spanish test driver Marc Gene – covered the distance in just under six hours.

The duo were two laps clear of the petrol-powered Pesca-rolo, driven by reigning champions Emmanuel Collard and Jean-Christophe Boullion.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Peugeot, though. The second of the two 908 coupés retired with only 15 minutes remaining while on target for a podium finish – a result that would have handed its two drivers – Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin – the LMS driver’s title. Gene said: “It was a great result for us, but a bitter moment for our team-mates. Falling out with 15 minutes left is even worse than when we went out of the Le Mans 24 Hours (where Gene’s car had engine failure with two hours to go). I guess that is why this racing is so exciting, because anything can happen.”

The finale at Interlagos, Brazil, during early November will be a nail-biter with both Peugeot pairs – as well as Boullion and Collard – still in the hunt for the championship.

Yeah, I agree, the Volkswagen Audi Group certainly know how to make excellent diesel cars :P

Has anybody used that Shell V-Power diesel yet? I've heard good things about it on a VW forum I'm a member of so I filled my tank with it last time & am going to give it a whirl for a bit. As with all fuel it will need a few tanks of it before any effects become noticable but they (the dubbers) reckon that it will noticeably increase power in the lower revs & be cheaper to use (price vs mileage) as well. Any opinions?

I put my first tank in last week, so too early to tell if it's made any difference.

There a re a few using it (or BP Ultimate) here, and have reported good things. See here.

No expensive Shell diesel around here but BP Ultimate is. So far, it might give me an extra mpg or two (though the difference so far is too small to be significant) - since it costs >10p/litre more than Shell (last fill was 104.9p, Shell, a couple miles away, was 92.9p) there's no financial incentive.

I saw the Audi a couple weeks ago in Aberdeen and it looked impressive. However, I think the JCB diesel land speed record holder is even better - broke the 350mph record whilst not running at full power!

DOH how could I forget that one....  and it is the same engine they put in the backhoe and Fast Trac (few of the farmers where I live have these, sure they race them across the fields)

I've been using Shell V-power diesel for nearly two month now. My car is smoother and more responsive. So far I am getting an extra 4 mpg compared to ordinary diesel. So with my mileage I will save money over the course of a year by using the Shell V-power diesel at 99.9p/litre compared to ordinary Shell diesel at 93.9p/litre.

In a lighter car like the Golf the extra mpg should be more pronounced.

I think it is well worth seeking out.

And if it's good enough for Le Mans winning Audi R10 Tdi's, it's good enough for my lovely RAV. :yahoo:

I somehow think not - in fact, the JCB Dieselmax has two of those beasts (one fore and one aft).

I too have started using Shell V power and have noticed my MPG display begin to climb each trip.I am a creature of habit so my driving patterns vary very little week by week and I am noticing a positive increase in MPG. I am not technical enough to be more specific but the display is definitely moving upwards.

Hadn't noticed that, I'll have a look later, thanks

That's high, like Fujisan the v-power at the shells by me is around 99.9/litre with the normal diesel usually costing 92.9 or 93.9p/litre. That might be because of the amount of the garages selling it locally because there are about 5 that I usually pass at some point or other & I think 4 of them sell it (the 1 not selling it being a mile or 2 away from another on the same road).

With the price in mind if I go from around 39mpg to around 42mpg it will pay for itself even though if it noticably improves performance I'd probably pay the extra even if I didn't get more miles from a tank of it

  • 2 weeks later...

I pass four garages on my trip home from work - three are BP and, until the latest tax hike, had standard diesel in the 95.9 - 97.9 bracket; the fourth is Rix with 5% bio at 99.9. Contrast that with a drive home from the airport and the first three garages (one right at the airport entrance) I pass are all Shell and all had diesel at 92.9 a week or so back. No Shell V-diesel up here, yet.

Having run a few tankfulls of BP Ultimate, my average consumption seems to have gone from around 42mpg to around 46mpg - worth a 7p increase in price in my present situation but, if I'm running low and there's a Shell garage nearby...

The fuel consumption we get from the RAV, considering it's vehicle type, size, weight, aerodynamics, four wheel drive system is, I find, astonishing :yahoo:

I never fail to be impressed by the mpg other owners and myself are getting, all things considered.

Well done Steve  46mpg is a credit to you and the RAV D4d! :toast:
