I suppose that if you have lost somebody from a desease that MAY have had some sort of contribution to it, you might feel emotive about diesels but it in my opinion it is a very weak argument.

Petrols (even those with part time electric motors) give off some hideous emmisions and so do gas fires and boilers and lots of other day to day products that you can link with deseases. Petrols engines and hybrids may provide a suitable alternative for light vehicles but removing diesels from them is pretty pointless when there are still trucks running around.

I'm all for completely green vehicles but we have to wait a while before the are developed to a practical level. And as for taxing diesels an extra 3% and loading the price of diesel you only have to stand on a street corner anywhere in India to realise that it is just another stealth tax on us Brits.

Cheers

I get the feeling that some people don't like diesel quite as much as we do. :o

I used to work for a haulier with a fleet of Gardner engined Fodens and if you've ever seen the clag from just one of those things, let alone 25 of them..... you could cut it with a knife. Still here albeit with intermittent bouts of raving madnessssssssssssssss!!!!!!

We also used to blow out the asbestos dust from truck brake drums until the sunlight wouldn't shine through it and I've brazed several diesel tanks on the vehicle with diesel in (no, no not petrol).

I'm fed up with global warming and carbon foot prints and my mum is 93 and smokes 40 !Removed! a day.

So if anything I think my RAV and it's Euro IV diesel is a fairly concientious contribution to the welfare of my fellow human beings.

Regards

How's this for an engine!

rta96c_crank.jpg

The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken.

It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Do the D4D DCAT engines kick out black smoke? This is my first diesel, and can't say I've ever noticed anything in my rear view mirror.

A lot less than most other vehicles but still will under load. Probably the only time you would notice is when you are gunning it up hill in the dark with something following you. Look in the driver door mirror and you will see it in the headlight of the following vehicle.

You probably won't see it often as not much can keep up with a T180 when it is being gunned - even up hill!!!!!!

"Bentley has said it is unlikely to produce diesel models, even though key competitors such as Porsche are bringing them to market.

According to a senior company source, Bentley has been conducting customer clinics to ask buyers what they think of diesel models - and most have been opposed to the idea.

He added that the company is also opposed to the idea for business reasons: “a lot of our cars are sold in the US and Asia and these are not diesel markets. We cannot make it stand up just developing a diesel model for Europe.”

Instead Bentley is forging ahead with plans to have its entire range capable of running on called second-generation biofuels made from waste material, rather than food stocks, by 2012. The company is currently developing an all-new engine which will power the next generation Arnage and Continental models. "

I remember a similar statement made by Porsche once upon a time!:lol::lol:

I believe Rolls-Royce are looking at alternative fuel vehicles as well.

They have a prototype that runs on Grouse Droppings ^_^
