Petrol Additives

Is there such a thing as a petrol treatment, contained in a bottle, that can be stowed in the car for the odd occasions when you can't get 98 RON or above fuel? The purpose of the additive being to raise the value of 95 RON or similar for emergency use without invoking "safe mode" in the ECU.

STP used to have this sort of product for enhancing the anti-knock properties of a fuel in the days of leaded petrol. Although I know little of it, I was always sceptical as to its true worth. Our jack thinks he can get such a thing for his compressor but I can't help thinking that it's just another urban legend.

Can anyone help settle the argument please?

Yes, you can get them. I've seen them on tuning web pages. Never used them though so I don't know if they're any good or not!!!!!!

I thought they were an urban legend too.

i just miller octane boost every 4 fill ups. proven to make it have a cleaner burn

Yours is a normally aspirated T Sport so it wouldn't need 98 RON or above to start with. Either way (compressor or not), do you notice any benefits, first hand, from using it?

Regards

I know Kimi always keeps some for when she can't get hold of 98 RON fuel for her Supercharged Yaris T-Sport, it might be an idea to PM her

i tell you waht will work, benzene. however this has its problems - namely its carcinogenic.

However it will deffo increase your octane level.

As I understand it, one of the reasons for limiting the engine performance when using a lower than 98 RON fuel is to prevent damage through excessive knocking (detonation) and consequent localised overheating. If the software detects a bad condition through various senses, it limits the fuel delivery and timing controls to a "safe" instruction set.

I am of the opinion that it should be possible to get 'round this when no correct fuel is available. Like you say, benzine or some other top fuel, correctly cut, should work. Thing is, it's complicated and messy. I now think that it is best to let the engine management do its restrictions if you can only get, say 97 (even 95) RON.

If it is a minimum "get you home" top-up - I see nothing wrong with filling up as soon as 98 or above is available and when the low fuel is flushed through, doing the reset procedure as discussed at length elsewhere in this forum... It's dead easy.

It has worked once for jack and me, It should work again, if required in difficult fuelling circumstances.

I stuck some of that stuff in a tank once and noticed absolutely jack all happening.

Never bought anything since, seems to be a fat placebo.
