Rav4 Power Steering Intermittent Failure

There have been similar failures of electric power steering on other Toyota models and there has been a recall. If the fault light is on - it should be possible to extract the fault code - this will be in the form C---- and this will give a clue as to where to investigate further - C1554 is often the code for steering ECU failure . The issue on other Toyotas relates to the steering ECU - there isn't a history of this on the Rav4 so it might be a case of watch this space. Where other systems fail at the same time as the steering, then loose / wet / dirty connections are to be suspected.

Hi Bryan,

Car still at the auto electricians trying to fix the issue. He has been talking to a number of Toyota service centres who are also unsure of the issue. He is checking connections and looking at replacing ECU but needle in a haystack with the amount of wiring connections. I am forwarding on all helpful suggestions given to me on this forum to him. 4hrs from home nearly got wiped out by a truck when the same lights came on in my 07 tab and it lost all power and p/s.

Has anyone gotten to the bottom of this issue? As my car is spending Xmas at Toyota as they’re not sure what to do.
