Hi every 1,i just bought a cts,but im having a few probs with my car. It an 03,completely standard. Its cold idle is up at 1600-1700 rpm until it get warm when it comes down to bout 900,takes about 2min if left left parked. Is that normal with this car?. Also while driving in traffic when the rpm is low im getting a vibration from the engine, vibration stops when rpm reaches bout 1900. Its almost as if the exhaust were louse but it not. Wondering is it anything to do with these famous clutches iv been reading about! Not slipping thou

If any1 knows anything about either it would really be a great help to me

Thanks

hi m8, i think the engine idle is normal for the cts's cos mine is exactly the same when cold and take's a good few minutes to go down to 800-900 rpm, the vibration from the engine could mean your laboring it if the rpm's too low, with the cts try to keep the rev's above 1500 rpm to prevent this ( you can only get away driving below 1500rpm with diesel engines most petrol's will be labouring below 1500rpm)

hope this helps :D

The idle on my cts is about 1200rpm when cold, no where near the 1900 you stated! After a few minutes of driving, it settles down at around 800-900.

The 1900 was when the vibration from engine stopped, only when in gear and moving in traffic or jus pullin off, cold idle between 1600-1700rpm. But you say 1200 which would strike me as normal, bout what every other car iv owned has done. No fault codes on car,ill have to go investigating! Sure if any1 1 else knows anything please let me know

My CTS did exacly the same, idling cold at about 1700rpm and made a rattling noise when setting off. did 20,000 miles with this happening without any problems. If u give it more revs when setting off you will find the noise is not there. I think it's just the engine labouring.

Yeha i agree with the guys there, when the car is cold i beleive its in the computer somewhere that instead of sitting flat it runs up a little to help get heat into the engine quicker as you cannot get the twin cam kicking in untill the engine warms up properly - good tihng for the winter :-)

The CTS like all toyota's has variable valve timing, like someone stated above the cold engine speed is just to warm the engine through quicker, you'll find that when sitting in traffic for a while the engine is warm it can drop down as far as 700ish rpm...leading to fewer emmissions and a quieter engine.

The revs that your getting are completly normal mate, dont worry about it. Your like me, your car is your baby, but trust me everything is fine! :D

Hope this puts your mind at rest! :D

Cheers

My Cold Start fast idle is approx. 1400rpm on the CTS - all depends on outside/coolant temp.

The noise/vibration from the engine is probably the drive belt or auto tensioner for the belt.

IIRC there is a modified tensioner by Mr T to rectify this noise.

Getting d tensioner on aux belt replaced next w.end, was on the list of things to do. Getting used to the noises it makes now, thought id bought an awful croc till i read some of the posts on here! Usual, trim rattling and that noise from the clutch when not accelerating plus the above. Im like that man said earlier, if i think my car isnt running rite not the kind of person who can just turn up the radio and forget, wish i could!! Prob is as well is theres not 2 many cts in Ireland, so when you do think there is summit wrong no one can give you an answer for sure cause they've never seen one before. This is even Toyota dealers!
