Winters back and I live in the sticks, too wet for the motorbike and my car does 15mpg so its time for another 4x4, ive got my heart set on a Hi-Lux, ive just looked at a proper tatty 90 H-reg.. 2.4TD, the engines done 91k, its got new tyres, new cambelt, engine, gearbox and dif oil have all been changed and it doesnt drive too bad other than the brakes are abit naff (but I am comparing them to 330mm dics with 4pots  ) it starts and runs just fine, its got new gabriel shocks etc. but the body work is dented, painted poorly and got rust spots but thats dont mater..

Question is what sort of things go wrong with the engine? what should I be looking for.. other than the obvious (turbo seals etc?) also do they tend to rot anywhere on the chassis??

Thanks for any info!

cheers!

Didn't you watch Topgear last sunday, they tried to kill one and couldn't

Bashed it, smashed it, left it in the sea, bashed it somemore and set fire to it. It still started

I missed that :( heard about it though :)

Shame you missed it :crybaby:

The engine was indestructable(ain't surprised), had a fair bit of rot on the bodywork due to a hard life on a farm but the chassis was ok

They are only as good as the last head gasket, prone to !Removed! out the cylinder head if they overheat, which can happen in minutes.

My old escort i drove home over 60 miles with nacked head gasket, but my very low mileage hiace died within 3 miles and the head is ruined over 500 quid to replace not including gaskets, double that including time, so check it well and be warned.
