Check Engine Light Came On - 98 Corolla

Hi. I am hoping someone can help. Have not been in great financial shape past 3 or 4 years and my check engine light came on last night. About 2 or 3 weeks ago I put my gas cap on the back of the car while getting gas, then drove off and forgot it was there. Went back but couldn't find it. So have been without a gas cap for that long. Went in an Avanced Auto Parts 3 days ago just to see how much they were and got one for $6. I told the guy what kind of car I had and he looked it up on computer. So have gone without any gas cap for about 2 or 3 weeks and finally get a gas cap and the check engine light comes on 3 days later. I do have a trustworthy place to take my car but I just don't have the money to fix it. What you don't know won't hurt you....or will it? Hopefully someone will tell me it's the gas cap thing and the light will go off soon......pleaseeeeeeeeeeee.

Dont know if it will help but it moght put your mind at ease.

Go to your trustworth place and ASK for advice.....would having the gas cap off for so long have anything to do with the engine light coming on?

What could the problem be without doing any diagnostics??
