Red Or Green Stuff BRAKES?

Ok just ordered my black disc combi front and rear brake discs and got the choice of red or green stuff breaks with only a £1 difference- now i hear the red stuff breaks take longer to warm up and if you are driving a lot of the motorway and decide to come off, the breaks are cold and take longer to stop where green stuff ones wrk super nice all the time - - can i have your views on this to help me decide which ones to go for pls and thanks :-)

Greenstuff will be ok for road use. Think the red stuff are more suited for track day use.

EBC brakes are good!

Stick with green stuff to be honest.

I had red stuff on my old MR2 but then they are advised to be used on cars in excess of 250bhp. Worked a treat and didnt need that much warming up but then i had to wait till the engine was at max operating temp before thrashing the car by which time the pads were ready as well. :P

was wondering if one has to inform the insurance company when changing brake discs...

and if so, does it increase the premium by much?

I believe brake discs are considered a comsumable item, therefore you can replace them without having to contact your insurance. And to be honest, if they had seen my brake discs and pads when I replaced them, firstly they would have wondered how I was still aliv and secondly run for theirs.

The contact surface is a dark grey but the outer surface will be green or red dependant on which ones you get. However you only see a very small amount of the colour through the alloys as the caliper sits over them and covers about 95% of the pad's surface from view.

thanks for the info re: insurance minimarc...

i had the front brake discs and pad changed at the 50000 miles service @ mrT for OEMs... and was told that the rear ones are good until the next service... i have run them for about 3000 miles now...

if i were to switch to black diamond combis with the green stuff for the front ones now, how safe would it be to put the current[used] front ones to the rear to cut costs... or do i need to get the same discs + pads combi at all corners for best safety...

Well you won't be able to move the front pads to the back as they are definitely axle specific, plus all of the uprated discs have seperate listings for front and rear so I'm not sure if you'd be able to shift the current fronts to the back of the car.

Ta minimarc

If only i had switched to te diamond blacks at the last service :crybaby: ...

Will switch the back ones in the meantime as they most probably will need to be replaced by the next service... won't that just look odd though!?

To be honest mate, I wouldn't worry about it looking odd, as long as you have decent brakes on the car :) Also as the rear brakes do very little in the while stopping the car process (the fronts do the serious work) then you could probably afford to skip the cost of combi discs on the rear and just get some cheaper grooved discs instead. Then when you have the money, get a decent set of discs/pads for the front where it is more important to have quality.

I rarely see my car in day light at the moment, as I drive to the train station when it is black as night each morning and I pick it up with the same light levels in the evening. If I do spot my car in sunlight I'll grab a picture of them. Alternatively flutter your eye lids at Gemma and she might pull in by my car and take a snap, as I know it's the highlight of her working day when she drives past my car in the mornings ;)

As for the discs, the combis are both drilled AND grooved :)

HAH! It must be your lucky day today. I am working from home today so took the opportunity to grab a pick of the brake pads for you. As you can see, there is very little of them to actually see once the caliper is put back over the top of them.

They do indeed look very nice. His wheels are 18's so the brakes will look bigger on standard rims.

Have to look into getting my brakes changed soon, but the current ones have been going strong for 2 years now. They don't seem to be wearing out at all. And i sure do use them ALOT.

Will wait till they start to go which should be soon, unless they are made of some super strength material. lol Keep going and going....

Anybody strengthened their brake pedal from the bulk head with a special bracket mounted to the chassis for a better more solid feel?

Did you get your calipers treated or painted with anything?

Mine look so untidy, same with the disks, they look like they are rusting. Really want the car looking smarter but they let things down.

I didn't do anything to the calipers when i did the brake change as they weren't in too bad a condition. They were absolutely covered in brake dust but apart from that they were in good condition. If i did do something with them, they'd probably end up silver or black as I'm not a fan of bright red calipers unless the car is powerful enough to warrant some LOOK AT ME brakes ;)

Armz, regarding your comment about your brakes being in good condition still, have you actually removed them and had a look? I kept getting a kocking noise under heavy downhill braking so that prompted me to change them (along with the scoring on the discs) and when I saw the state of the pads I couldn't believe the car would ever stop with them on. They were worn down to about 3mm on either side and had large (and I don't use that word lightly here) cracks right the way through what was left of the pad surface all the way to the backing plates. I have no idea how many miles I was away from them completely disintegrating

LOL, i was actually thinking of getting mine done red, but after what you wrote i probably won't now. Maybe just do them in the same colour as the car, carlo blue.

I had a service and mot done on friday just gone so they are ok, and they were not changed last year during service and mot, so thats over 2 years! Can't believe it. They've lasted a long time and still going. I don't know how much pad is left, but the toyota guys haven't marked anything for my attention on the work sheet.

Has anyone ever fitted MINTEX pads.

Priced them up at £26 front, £18 rear, loads cheaper than EBC.

The guy at the brake factors asked if i wanted quality pads or budget, i said quality and he recommended these.

Never heard much about them though.
