Rav Heater

Hi All

I recently purchased a RAV4 for the wife and we are really enjoying the new car. Unfortuneately the heater does not seem to work. The fan is working, so I would imagine that it has something to do with the heater matrix. Can anybody please advise ?

It is a 1996 model

Thanks

Funny one. I have had no probs with my 1994 RAV heater despite a lay-up of 2 years. Sounds like a jammed valve on the water valve...unless someone has bypassed the heater for a reason?

I'll have a look at mine and see if there is anything obvious...

That or a thermostat stuck open, causing cool water to circulate. Your temperature gauge should read at least halfway

Thanks for the replies ;)

The temp guage seems normal (halfway), so I also suspect something minor has gone wrong. If anybody can guide me where to look for obvious problems it would be of great help as I do not want to get the main dealers looking at this and charging a fortune for it !

Thanks

  • 1 month later...

Hi Guys

As the days are getting colder now I really need to get this heater sorted. My wife had the car at the dealership and they are talking of talking the dashboard off etc costing £300 plus. As mentioned previously, where should I look for a stuck open valve or anything that may cause this annoying problem ?

Thanks

Hmmm

It could be an airlock, but I've never had that trouble wi the RAV. I have removed the dashboard from my '94 and altho bitty, is not difficult by any means. It may be that the heater control cables need adjusting. I doub if the heater matrix is blocked but it does no harm to run through a flusher for the whole sytem. I have had no problems with the heater system on my '94 model despite a 2 year lay-up.

i know there are some models with air conditioning but I have no experience of those.

To me it sounds like a sticking valve. having suffered the same wi my trafic, I replaced 1 valve, then learnt that a sharp shock wi a rubber hammer ofetn sorted the problem. If yer living in the glorious warmth o England, maybe the heater has been switched off for a few months /years and all the valve needs id a dunt;and the cables checked in case they've seized. Either email me at ian@silverwells.com or send me a message through this forum and I can look at things more closely. Alternatively, Parts-King is a joyful, knowledgeable gentleman...

Course, you could limit your mileage from your hose and install a 240V fan heater oan an extension.

could be the cable has dislodged, under the bonnet near the Battery two heater pipes should go through the bulkhead, one should have a valve with a blue cable attatched, if it is attatched get somebody to move the temp control whilst you watch the valve, if it doesn't it has come away at the control end
