Metallic Sounding Rattle

Afternoon everyone,

I have an 06 roadster and it has an annoying rattle when going over speed bumps. I have to go over them to get home so i can't just stop going over bumps (or i would). If it was just a niggling interior rattle, id turn up the radio and ignore it but it sounds like it's something underneath at the back.

I've done a search on another mr2 forum and checked the following things, wheel caps, nappy thing underneath, heat shield, lights - someone suggested the bulbs may have become loose), the black canister thing under the bonnet on the right hand side, the boot lid, the wind deflector. All these appear to be tight and not rattling.

The sound is a metal rattle/thud when i got over speed bumps. I have jiggled (gently) the exhaust but this is tight and not moving.

Can you guys think of anything please? It is still under warranty but i havent had much success with 'service depts' in the past and just hoped someone out there could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for looking.

Sarah

(It's got a rattle but i still love it)

Sarah,

It's a long shot, but, have you checked to see if the jacking tools in the small pouch in the compartment behind the driver's seat are secure and not rattling against each other?

Personally, I would take it into a dealer and ask the service manager or a mechanic to accompany you on a test drive...

By the way if your car should develop a rattle in the vicinity of the the glove box - don't worry - it's perfectly normal (certainly on 2003 models anyway)!

Sorry can't offer more help...maybe someone else can!

Thanks Dave

I tried that. I really hoped it would be that but unfortunately it still made the noise. I'm going to book it into the dealer and let them take a look but i don't have much faith in them as when i told them about a 'water leak' that after checking this forum, turned out to be blocked drains (which i've cleared), and they said it was just condensation off my exhaust that was dripping onto the floor DOH!, i doubt they will cure my rattle/thud.

Thanks though and i'll see if anyone else makes any suggestions

I recon it is one of the many heat shields on the exhaust system  (the glove box rattle is easily cured by putting a little insulation tape on the striker bar, Mr T did mine under warranty many moons ago and it has been ok since

Les

It isn`t by any chance the black plastic knob which holds the spare wheel in place having slackend off and allowing the spare to move ?

I know you said the noise is from the rear, but with such a small car the origin of any rattles etc can me misleading.

Bob.

Thanks Les. I thought you might come up with something. I must say, it does sound like an 'exhaust type' sound.

I got the car at York Toyota but i've booked it in at our local Toyota (10 minutes away) for Wednesday morning. When i spoke to the service dept, he said it could be a couple of things. He sounded like he knew what he was talking about so fingers crossed.

I was out in mine today - topless! Not bad for October

Thanks Bob, I'll certainly check that tomorrow. It would be nice to sort it rather than sitting in the garage while they try to find the problem.

I'll try to take some pics and get them on here and then the people who've helped me can see what i've got.

It's silver so i think Les will approve

Hi guys (and gals),

I've been to the Toyota dealer in Scunny today and they were great. My rattle turned out to be the roll bar. It was completely disconnected at one side and this is what i could hear. I'm a bit surprised and annoyed as i expected it to be spot on, as i bought it from a Toyota dealer with less than 4.000 miles on. I just hope everything else is connected!!!!

I've taken some photos, i just need to figure out how to put them on here.

Thanks for your help everyone in trying to assist with my rattle
