has anyone had this problem.today my celica vvti started running on kangaroo juice with the rev counter bouncing up and down, then the management light came on and the car stopped.i disconnected the Battery and it started again no problems, drove about 2 miles and the car died again but this time couldnt get started.after waiting for the rac for ages i thought i should check i have petrol(gauge was showing half a tank)so i opened the cap and it there was a lot of pressure build up in there.tried the car again and it started and ran fine.im now running with the cap barely fitted and the car is running sweet.is there a pressure relief valve anywhere or does the build up of pressure get released some other way.i was think of drilling a tiny hole in my cap to stop it happening again or is this a bad idea.when the rac man finally got back in touch i told him what i found and he said that pressure build up would stop the car running and he suggested i take it to toyota and let them look at it.

I read somewhere a few months ago that this problem was subject to a recall, something to do with the fuel tank breather.

Maybe worth a call to Toyota to get a free fix?

I have the same hissing noise when I unscrew the filler cap when filling up, (2004 VVTi) but as yet no stalling or rough running issues.

ok the fuel thing was a bit of a red herring, the problem was traced to a bad earth on the rear of the cylinder head,i just cut out the bad piece and refitted to the head and the car has been running great since

many thanks to everyone
