2007 New Car Clutch Problem

i Guys, I am new to this forum, so hello to all.

My problem is this. I bought a new 2007 Yaris only 10 days ago and have already had one new clutch fitted. Now I am really getting mad as I think the problem has returned and I will yet again need another clutch. Its hard sometimes to get the car into reverse once I stop, and travelling along, it is not easy sometimes to get into second gear either up or down the box.

Just wonder if I can get a NEW car or my money back.

Neither do I with an attitude like that. We needed more information, there is a lot of knowledge on here and we are genuinely trying to help.

All we knew was that it is a Yaris. To give you a helpful answer or any advice we need to know a lot more, hence the questions.

I can see where the mat question was going, clutch slip if they are too thick (so you can’t depress the clutch properly) mats have caused problems in the past with accelerators and brakes.

I sugest you stop getting your knickers in a knot and try again.

Trust me; you will know when we are taking the proverbial pish

I think you will find my question is serious!!

The number of people we get complaining that there car is broken/clutch slipping/ clutch worn out only for me to go out and find that they have non genuine/very poorly fitting mats is crazy! Alot of non gen mats bunch up under the pedals and this makes it difficult to engage the gears.

And as parts-king asked...does it have MMT?

Re Shamus 19 comments on his Yaris clutch problems. Recently took delivery of a 2007 1.3 Yaris SR and it was clear that a major clutch judder was evident, returned to garage and they insisted no problem found. Returned shortly after this time I managed to speak to a technician in dealer grounds who casually admitted that a lot of Toyota Yaris's do have a clutch judder problem and as a result Toyota have addressed this by modifying the clutch. Car was test driven and bingo! this time they admitted clutch judder was evident, so booked vehicle in for the next week. Received a call mid day confirming that gearbox had been accessed and a new modified clutch had been fitted. All was well?? Mmm not quite because I had now inherited a diferent problem "when cold " both reverse and 2nd gear were difficult to engage. Contacted Dealer once again they said that they could not find a problem so I suggested leave car overnight and test drive cold the next morning, I was advised to make a note of the mileage by a third party and glad I did will explain later I left the car at dealers. The next day I was contacted and informed that no fault was found by not one but 3 technicians who had apparently test driven my vehicle when I arrived to collect car the guy on reception? told me that he had just this minute road tested the car also and No Problems were found making a total of four test drivers curiously when I checked the mileage the car had in fact covered barely one mile? So any one good at maths out there tell me what is one mile (distance travelled) divided by not one but four drivers? The car was dropped off when the overnight ambient temperature did not go below 50 degrees, recent overnight temperatures have been 3/4 degrees and the problem is now much more apparent. Toyota have advised me that they have trawled their system and can find no such problems with thier modified clutch cleearly they have not read Shamus 19 post which is a carbon copy of my problems. Written to Toyota and dealer awaiting response, sadly from past experiences I am not hopeful.

My Yaris TR 1.3 manual, registered Jan 08 with 2000 miles on the clock has serious clutch judder on cold days. I took it to the dealer this morning, but was expecting them to be unable to recreate the issue (as it's a warmer day) and send it back. They just phoned to say they're installing a whole new clutch assembly. They insist that the issue is totally unheard of, but as I say I've had a problem they'll put a new one on regardless... Is it just me or is that suspiciously helpful?!!

Update 6th April:

So far so good. The new clutch, or maybe the act of fitting it seems to have corrected an alignment issue. The gear change is now free, notchy, and springs to centre as it should. It's much better. The car also seems to have less of a shuffle issue (springy feeling due to driveline windup when you put your foot down or back off quickly); I think they've put a clutch with stiffer springs on, but maybe that'll come back as the clutch gets run in and the springs relax a bit. At the moment the car feels like the demonstrator that I drove when I bought it. I'll let you know if I have any more problems.

They hinted that they had not changed many. Which in mind means it's a known fault.

So anybody out there reading this if you have a recent 1.3 Yaris make sure you try leaving the car out in the cold for a few days and then drive it.

If you drive the car everyday you may have the fault but will never notice it. That's based on the assumption that the fault does not get worse over time.

With the warm weather the fault will go away. So you may not notice the problem for a year.

Will the garages change the clutch on a one year old car? That is the question all will they blame the driver for riding the clutch.

I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the fault is fixed and the gearbox still works OK afterwards.

Will post here again once I have road tested the car on Monday after leaving all weekend.

This is my first Toyota and depending on the outcome may be my last.

Could I ask that anybody with the same fault on a 2007/2008 Yaris do a quick post.

My 2000 1.0gs has had terrible clutch judder when cold. A clutch specialist could not replicate the fault. I've learned to live with it and save the £450 a dealerquoted to change it

Iv got a new shape toyota yaris, T3 1.3 petrol 56 reg which i bought on the 14th april 2008.

i too have started experiencing the exact same problems listed on this page, and again, i think its due to the cold weather we have had over the last month.

basicly - reverse is difficult to get, sometimes will only "half" go in, and when you bring the clutch up, the gears just squeal, so then you push the clutch down again, and try again and it usually goes in, not that easy tho.

1st, 2nd and 3rd are difficult, 2nd is by far the worst - even crunching into gear, but once the car was been driving for 20+ mins and is warmed up, it smooths out a bit - but again 2nd isnt as easy as the other gears to get.

the car is currently at a toyota dealer, having the clutch looked at, and possibly replaced.

am waiting to see what they say.

i just hope it is the clutch that is the problem and not a syncromesh, and that the new clutch has sorted this problem.

just to recap, the car is a new shape 56 plate, T3, 1.3 petrol, 5 speed manual, with 18000 miles on it.

Mine is an 06

I have had to have a new clutch twice, my gearbox has been out at least twice and various parts replaced, but still has all the same selection problems as you, and also mine sometimes refuses to go into 1st gear.

I had a 2001 T-Sport, and the gearchange was really good, but that was made in Japan.

At least it has'nt got the judder now. !

Best of luck trying to get it sorted, but i think that's as good as it gets !

Yeah im a bit worried - one of the reasons i bought this car was because i thought being a toyota it would be reliable and cost less over time.

the way its looking, its gonna cost more in repairs once the warrenty runs out.

but anyway

they had a look at it, and said its the gear box.

so its booked in on the 12th nov for three days while they take the gear box to bits and have a look.

personally i think its the clutch, but it could be the gear box itself.

the way im looking at it now is that it costs more to have a gear box done than a clutch, so money wise its better for me if the problem doesnt get fixed in the remaining 10 months or so of warrenty left.

their gonnaa give me another yaris as a curtesy car so thats good of them, means im not left stranded while they do the work.

so far, this is what happened,

About 3 weeks ago it went in for a 2yr service. it needed a new wiper blade which i had to pay for along with the service itself (£170), but they found it was leaking oil from the gear box side drive shaft seal, and so had to go in again, the week after, where they did the seal, but then found the horn didnt work.

so it was bookd in again to have the horn done, which involved the front bumper being removed.

after a day, i noticed the bumper wasnt fitted to the car correctly, and the gear box problem became more noticble (at the same time the weather got a lot colder)

so i took it in this week, to have 3 things done.

Re-fit the bumper

To make the dash dim down when you turn the lights on (it didnt do this before for some reason)

and to look into the gear box problem, and to possibly fit a clutch.

well, problems 1&2 got fixed, but its still got to go in again to have the gear box done, and i suspect it will hav to go in again to have the clutch done.

also, the stearing is slightly off centre, but i cant be bothered to keep asking them to do it, so once theyve fixed the gear problem, im just gonna nip into a tyre place and get them to straighten it up.

This is interesting.

My drive shaft oil seal has also failed (oil all over my drive), same side as yours, and my steering is odd, in that when going straight ahead, i am steering at 12.05 !

But the dealer and Toyota says there is nothing wrong. ?...

The more i see here, seems to tell me there are some very common problems here ?..

So yeah, not too happy, and i have been looking at some other cars, but i figured im better with the devil i know than the one i dont!

(although i think the next car might be a VW diesel golf instead of an auris)
