Hello RAVers,

I could probably find this information in the book or elsewhere, but recieving it first hand from someone here really does help, just in case I overlook something.

I travel over 500 miles a week at present, and have so far done 3,000+ miles since I bought the car (2nd hand Arnold Clark)

Should I be looking to top it up with some water or oild round about now, or perhaps doing anything else thats essential for its care and upkeep?

Whereabouts is the infra red key fob receiver within the car? As lately my key fob has been a little erratic when trying to open/close doors etc.. and i'm wondering if perhaps I just have something in front of the receiver within car.

How can I get a duplicate key made including another alarm fob thingy?

Just noticed that my exhaust is making somewhat of a rasping noise, though I don't know whats normal and not as far as how it should sound? Is there anything I could check out myself or should I just take it into Kwik Fit or somewhere to have them check it out?

There was something else, I can't remember right now.

Thank very much for your help and insight.

What age / mileage is the car??

Depending where you are in Scotland, theres a few good exhaust companies who can do you a stainless steel exhaust - depends on how long you intend keeping it.

I think the thing you didn't remember was to add some details about your vehicle to your profile! ;)

With all cars you should check the oil every week or two until you establish the consumption. You can then start drawing the period out accordingly. Up to a litre of oil between services is not out of the way especially if it has synthetic based oil in it. I would not expect any water consumption unless there is something wrong (leaking). Check the tyres until you establish consumption at the same periods.

The receiver for the remote is behind the glovebox but unlee you have lined it with lead then don't worry about the contents even if it is full of electrical gadgets. Start with new batteries in the key fob. You will have to order spare keys and remotes from Toyota as they have to be programed.

The exhausts do have a slight rasp but have it checked if you are worried. I prefer local independants to nationals - just my opinion. Your Toyota dealer will offer the best quality exhaust and they may be on offer so just check.

Cheers

Woops 3 Door NV - 2003 - 49,000 miles

I haven't checked the oil at all since purchasing it a monthish ago (3,000ish miles ago)....

I guess then I will do so tomorrow.... how can I tell what type of oil is used?

I'll have a Toyota dealer look at the exhaust asap.... how much you reckon they will charge me for doing this simple check?

I cant hear the rasp inside and everything sounds smooth as normal, so maybe it is all fine, i'll find out in any case.

I'll get onto them about another key also just to be safe as my spare crumbled into dust the first time I tried using it in the ignition.

Thanks very much for your help

Just use a good quality 5/30 or 10/40 semi synthetic. It will mix OK. I personally only use Morris's oil.

You can keep track of things a bit better after you have had it serviced. How much they charge for checking the exhaust might depend on if you bought the car there or if you intend having it serviced there. I wouldn't expect much - £5 maybe??? Perhaps a local would do it for nothing. You can still shop around for prices afterwards.

Cheers

At the low mileage, there should be nothing wrong wi yer exhaust unless some prat pranged it by reversing intae sumpthin horrible or whacked aff one o the many speed reducing humps that are growing aroon the toon.

Ye have the thing aboot some damage to the cat converter being concertina d after a reversing stunt. I'd get a trustworthy layabout to sit in the car and rev the engine up whulst ye lie unner the car listening/looking/feeling fur any exhaust gas escape. If ye cannae find a trustworthy pal, the reverse the roles.

best of luck

ps I've just used Freeflow in Shotts to make up my custom exhaust in stainless steel and they are VVV good at what they do. Just don't expect it to be done in a day....... good price but

the mad yin :D :D :D :D :D
