Top Mounted Intercooler Wanted

Am sliding into this forum in the hope someone can point me in the right direction..

Have had a 3SGTE engine fitted from a MR2 rev2 (I believe). Same 1998cc block as the RAVs 3SFE but we've elbowed a bit of space for the extra needed for the alloy head and turbo etc.

I'm looking for a top mounted intercooler and pipes and pump to fit - anyone any ideas on where I could source one - they seem to be like gold dust??

cheers

Ian

Hi,

i'd try out www.gt4oc.net plenty of people with ST185's that ditch the top mount intercooler. why not go FMIC? :)

thanks for the replies - I'll check out the links...

we can't go for a front mounted cos of the tight space in the engine compartment - theres space for a front mounted radiator in front of the water cooling radiator, but as this has had to be moved forward, space to get airducts up and through to the inlet is very very tight/impossible without doing a lot more work. We do have space on top of the engine for a top mounted intercooler, without hacking the bonnet, and can pipe water from a radiator fitted in front of the main radiator although again its quite tight.

As far as we know, there are only a small handful of RAVs converted in this way and of those, they are not in Europe !

I'll chase up these ideas thanks and will post an update.

Ian

the eBay link is for an ST205 chargecooler, which will fit but will need some hacking about, best bet is a charge cooler from an ST-185 RC/CS which will only need a new inlet rubber (about £30 from MR t)

If you've room for a CC pre-rad you must be able to sort out a small FMIC :P :D

i was a bit confused reading the tittle then realising it was a charge cooler that you were after as i was going to offer a TMIC that's in my garage for a small fee. Jones~32, Marc at 'The Garage' has done the conversion for him IIRC so if he had the chance for a FMIC he'd fit it B) , bothwell buyer, next time your in tell marc Chris from the old ss-R says hey.

aparently a metro radiator is a good upgrade for the standard CC radiator but i'd need to double check which car it is for definate if you manage to find one

Hi and thanks for the info. I'll let Marc know when I see him next week.

On the front cooler issue, there is space for a small radiator - and the one Dennis thinks is from a baby Fiat. The RAV radiator has been pushed forward a good couple of inches to allow space for the turbo. The other issue is that we can find space to feed a couple of 22mm water pipes around, but there isn't the space to get airflow pipes in. The alternator has been relocated to the front offside of the engine to allow access to it without taking the engine out, and again it has the knock on effect of closing up space. There is space on the top of the engine - bonnet, and through one of the links and a few phone calls I got hold of a GT4 205 CC from guys at TCB Parts in Cornwall.

We'll get this fitted up after the KAD brakes have been installed at the front.

Ian :) :) :)

Thanks for the posts and suggestions. After a few phone calls led off by contacts given here, I got a good ST205 job, bought a new pump, and Dennis at The garage got hold of a small radiator which just fits in and does the job!

Project almost finished, with some photos on the RAV forum. Rollover cage still to be done but we're sorting out the suspension and clutch first.

I've got the beast back for a fortnight to try it out.

For a 3 door RAV4 absolutely awesome. 100mph+ in 3rd gear 4 wheel drive!

Will begin on the smaller things in a fortnight when Marc at The garage in Wishaw has moved to his bigger garage nearer Motherwell. A wee thing I need is the bracket next to the throttle mech, to fit with the GT4 intercooler. The one I have is from the MR2 and its ok but a bit too thick. The GT4 is thinner so i'll phone around the sources you guys gave me before.

I think we have about 300bhp going through the beast - awesome performance!!!!!!!!!!! What next ? Open to suggestions -- hill climbs ??

hill climbs, auto test, think there's a grass section of the auto test that my mate used to do and had a great time, trouble is it's in Ayrshire through the EACC

Thanks for that - will have a look. If it gives an old man reason to cut the drinking then great! Anyway, the sister-in-law lives in Prestwick.

what have you done to get it to 300bhp? is it a gt four engine uve got?

The guys I have used at The Garage reckon once all work is finished and tuning complete that we will be up around there. I have the car out just now for a fortnight to muck about with it as they change premises. Compared to a normal RAV, its completely bonkers driving! Marc at The Garage has some considerable experience with the 3SGTE engine and is tuning/boosting it up to the highest feasible against the use. (I believe he has used 3SGTE engines for drag events). The fact that the RAV runs 50:50 4 wheels drive will make it interesting when we get it on a rolling road. The next step is to replace the rear bushes which at the moment make for challenging driving - however the high spec clutch is able to put down a lot of power and it shows. The other thing I suppose is it is a 3 door RAV so its pretty light, but the balance is quite good. The engine detail is not my specialism, so I'll have to rely on the guys until we get it onto a rolling road.

8 days ago, the guys won various classes at a local rolling road event, including Dennis with his 330bhp mini. They have a great reputation in the West of Scotland.

The weather here has been wet all weekend so I've not managed to get out much in it. But its like having to get to know a new car and its capability. From the little I've done, the wife is scared to travel in it!!

nice sounds mental!!

managed to get out on the motorway and the accelaration in 3rd/4th is amazing. Haven't managed to get to 5th gear yet! Thankfully wur boys in blue an their blue unmarked BMW had pulled an Avensis in for speeding, so I'd a clear run!! The brake fluid warning light comes on when accelarating even tho the tank is filled to the top mark!
