Ice Scrapers

Last winter I managed to scratch my glass in a few places using my ice scraper. The Yaris must have softer glass than other cars because I've never had this problem on any car I've owned before.

I tried several scrapers (all with plastic blades) and they all leave scratches.

Can anyone recommend a good ice scraper that won't scratch glass. I warm the car up and use the heater for the windscreen but I find the humble ice scraper is the best method for quickly clearing the rest of the windows.

I always use warm water from the tap in a 2 litre water bottle. Clears the whole screen and clears the wipers. Environmentally friendly and no cost

Start your car and leave it running for 5 minutes with the windscreen blowers on the full heat and power, by the time you've had your cerial the ice will fly off after using the wipers once or twice.

And your car could be five miles down the road because some :censor: has stolen it  ;)

you could use the old Credit Card, they make a very effective scraper, no damage to the glass AND you get really cold fingers while you do it ( that last part isn't really a positive though !)

a derv engine wont get much heat at all in 5 minutes as they need to be under load to get hot.

use de icer sprays as already said , its what its made for.

or

place 2 sheets of newspaper under the wiper arms overnight keeps alot of ice away .

Ice scrapers always leave scratches on the windshield. During winter I always start the engine and use its heat to defrost the windshield switching on the windshield defrost button and switching off the A/C button. In about 6÷8 minutes the frost on the windshield is turned into water. I wake up a bit earlier but my windshield is perfect!

I saw a nifty thing at Makro a couple of months ago. Basicaly it was a small fan heater with a timer and rechargeable Battery. You set the heater on the dash and program it to come on 30 mins before you are due to go out in the morning.

It comes on and de-ices your windscreen ready for you. When you drive off the batteries get recharged from the lighter socket. Think it was about £30.
